So Seek, Kifaru, Mytrail, and the others discussed here all require that you use a seam treatment when you get them home?

Silicone coated nylon cannot be taped (yet). MyTrail uses a Sil coating on the outside, PU on the inside, specifically so it can be taped. This appealed to the mass market folks who don't care to educate themselves.

If sealing your own shelter takes a lot of effort you are doing it wrong. Thin the sealer down, use a foam brush, paint it on the seams. It doesn't take much. When new most sil shelters will be waterproof without sealer; the nylon threads swell when wet and won't leak. It's only with UV exposure that the thread looses its elasticity and needs the help of some extra goop.
