Hey guys! I was stuck at the office for opening day of general deer here in WA but luckily my best friend was willing and able to take my son out. They left Friday after school and the plan was for them to hunt Saturday and then I would meet them Sunday morning. My son had a general deer tag and also a 2nd deer tag good for any doe.

Saturday morning Rob and Dylan hiked up to a favorite glassing point and were able to spot a bedded whitetail buck about 1000 yards out. They got it in the spotting scope and verified it was legal, then made a plan to get closer. They backed off the hill they were sitting on and used a hill between them and the buck for cover. After getting just under 500 yards away they had to crawl for the next 100 or so yards to get to a spot my son could lay down and shoot without the tall grass getting in the way.

At 365 yards they had a good spot that cleared the grass. Rob ranged the buck and dialed his 300WM. Dylan made a great shot right through the vitals and the buck never stood up.

Thanks guys!

While Rob went to get the truck, Dylan decided to hike to the top of the ridge above the buck to look over. He spotted some deer and hunkered down until Rob got back. When he got there Dylan waved him over to have a look. It turned out that it was a doe and what looked like a yearling or a fawn so they decided to pass.

After they got the buck hauled out of the field they headed to another spot with some alfalfa to look for another doe. As they hiked around a hill they spotted what they thought were two does. They crawled into position and Dylan was setting up for the shot with his .243 when they realized one was a spike buck. Rob told Dylan which one was the doe and he settled the cross-hairs on her vitals. At the shot she ran about ten feet and was down for good. Another great shot right through the vitals.

Thanks guys. He's been very blessed so far in his first few years. This is his third buck and he's only 13!
