I was able to purchase some decent glass this year. ( Vortex 4-16 Viper HSLR) I have a cow elk hunt and thought I would mount it up on my wifes Tikka 7mm-08. I bought some nice rings and sighted it in. I bought some Browning 144 grain ammo and it seems to like it very well. I'm excited about this set up but after years of using a 180 grain bullet in a 30-06 I can't help but feel a little under gunned. Just thought I would like to solicit some input here from you all.

Same here. I switched from 7RM to 7-08 this year and am very happy so far. Won’t catch me with a magnum again. Plenty for elk out to 500 especially if you step it up to the 150gr precision hunter or if you handload, something in the 160gr neighborhood.

Many moose die well every year by the 243.
And if you have to ask, you’re with the 99% of us hunters that reach our accuracy limit before the cartridge does.

Ok let me stir the pot a little. Like I said, this is my wife's gun. Any suggestions for a caliber that's a little flatter shooting but still on the light recoil side of things? I realize it's a can of worms but I'm looking for a gun for myself for the future.

@ram94 has a good list started. I'll add 25'06 and 6.5 PRC.

IMO, 140gr bullets pushed faster than about 3,000fps is where my recoil discomfort starts. I think that's around 17lbs of recoil. Pick any popular caliber below those criteria and put them in a 7lb rifle for comfortable recoil.
