I was thinking to suggest going with the 180 Partition. But I wouldn't quibble about about an extra 20gn. No big game you couldn’t hunt with that.

There are no flies on the 180g partitions, I just sort of became a fan of “heavy for caliber” bullets after moving here to AK.

In just the last few years my 30-06 has been used to take:

elk
mule deer
black bear
pronghorn antelope
wolf
grizzly

It did just fine on all those at ranges from 40 yards to 340 yards.

Most of those were taken with the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at 2940 fps, from a 24" Remington barrel. I did go to the 200 gr Nosler Partition for the grizzly hunt - during which I also shot the wolf. Though I normally use the 165, I have to admit that the 200 worked very well.

If by some odd stroke of fate, I had to go to one hunting rifle, it's my 30-06 that I'd keep.

Regards, Guy

What powder are you using to get a 165 grain Accubond going 3000fps in your 30-06? I wouldlike to try it in mine.

Thanks

IMR 4064 will easily get you there with a 24” barrel and a book load. I’ve shot it in two 24” barreled guns and it hit 3k FPS a half grain under max. From an 18” barrel it gave me 2850 FPS.

I shoot a kimber montana with a 24” tube and get 3k with the 165 accubond and 4064 and 2980 FPS from a 168 ttsx with RE19. I’ve also dabbled with a 130 ttsx at 3350 FPS and a 200 Accubond at 2730 FPS.

Lots if negativity around the ‘06 here and most places on the web and more often then not it’s guys using antique load data, the wrong powder or have some type of prejudice about the old round. Its a great cartridge.

Have a line on a very nice 30-06 on what seems to be a solid price. I have a 308 and 270 WSM and was looking for 300 win mag, but this rifle is talking to me. Will be used for deer and hopefully for elk in the not so far future. Thoughts are appreciated.

I just did this exact thing and can definitely see utility to it. The calibers are essentially microcosms of the two rifles- a 20" Howa 1500 in a Hogue stock and a 22" Remington 700 BDL blued/ walnut. The .30-06 is a beautiful, classic rifle that's ~200 FPS faster, depending on the load, while the .308 is short, weatherproof and extremely handy. Float trip for Alaska moose? .308. Day hunting Elk or Mulies in the rockies? .30-06. The impetus behind my .30-06 acquisition was actually an upcoming Nilgai hunt, where that extra energy could definitely be useful.

To answer the question that's been touched on, '06 is superior to magnums because the difference between the rifles you're talking about would provide close to the same energy gain as some magnums, but with less recoil, better barrel life and cheaper/ more available ammo.

Hodgdon Superperformance.

I have not tried Superformance in my 30-06, but have happily used it in the 6mm Creedmoor where it performed very well.

For the 30-06, I'm still using H4350, with good accuracy, and it boots the 165's out at about 2940 fps, from my 24" Remington rifle.

Some folks still seem to think that the ol' 30-06 is stuck in the 2600 - 2700 fps range with hunting bullets. Nope! Nothing wrong with that velocity, but there is a lot more available via handloading. I haven't shot any factory 30-06 ammo in a long danged time. Wonder how fast it is these days?

Hathcock had an ‘06... that’s all you need to know.

You can go to Walmart and likely be geared up better than he was back in the day. Yet fellas wanna cry about “extra drift” and making themselves feel like special deer snipers. GMAFB....

But hey, it sells stupid shit to stupid people.

BTDT - one of the reasons I primarily shoot a 243 now. Those 165s are instant killers, great combination of weight vs speed. We used Nosler Ps.

Factory 150 gr = 2900, 165 = 2800, 180 = 2600 if memory serves.
