I did this gear modification a couple years ago.

I turned my tent rain fly into a spike camp shelter

Its holding up great! Because I havent spiked out in it yet

This is one reason I like my BA Copper Spur tents. With the footprint they can be run in "fast fly" mode without the tent, but could be easily modified to do the same as you did without even the footprint. But either way I use something under my sleeping pads like Tyvek or the footprint, so I might as well just use the footprint if I'm going to bring a groundcloth instead.
