Hey guys we applied for CO 3rd season this year and we should draw the unit we applied for. My question is what shelter would you recommend that I would be able to backpack in with? There will be three of us. Can anyone help me out?

I wouldn't do a sawtooth for three unless the other two weren't dudes, it would be real cramped. They say take the number of people a tent is rated for and divide by two. If you buy a Kifaru, the resale value is crazy close to the new price, so if you wanted to sale it and downsize or upsize, you wouldn't be out much, the other brands generally don't recoup quite as much from what I've seen on the classifieds!

while 3 will fit in a six man you will be cramped. an 8 is about the best to carry in and run a stove without bumping it a lot.

a 12 man would be better yet but it is heavy and a large volume to pack. cutting a pole of the length required for a 12 is a questionable endeavor. cutting a pole for a six is an easy way to save weight.

try to build a mock up of your shelter of choice with string and an old blue tarp around a post or pole. this will give you a good idea of size.

Keep in mind a 8 or 12 man will be heavier and you have to split gear with your friends.A Seekoutside 6 man is very doable with 3 guys stove and gear. You can put 3 cots like this, stove on front and you have plenty of room for gear.

Thanks for the help guys I will look into the 6 and 8 man. We are all over 6ft so the more you guys talk the more I think I better go a little bigger.

Hunted CO 2nd Season last year in a SO 8 person with XL Ti Stove- once you have the stove setup, a pile of wood and your sleeping arrangements for everyone setup, there is not a whole lot of extra room for gear- especially if all 3 of you are trying to hang gear to dryout. Happy we had an 8 person and think it would have been pretty crammed in a 6 person.

I'd highly recommend you check out the Redcliff from Seek Outside. The modified pyramid style tent gives you great usable space, which is important for any single pole designed tent. Would work perfectly for 3 guys, gear and a stove. The 6 man tipi would also work well, but for 3 guys I'd lean towards the Redcliff.
