Congressman Raul Grijalva Democrat from AZ introduced bill H.R 2245 nicknamed the Cecil Bill....to coincide with the Disney release of "The Lion King".

The synopsis;
"To amend the Endangered Species Act of 1973 to prohibit import and export of any species listed or proposed to be listed under such Act as a threatened species or endangered species, and for other purposes."

This bill is sponsored by;
Mr. Grijalva (for himself, Mr. Brendan F. Boyle of Pennsylvania, Mr. Cartwright, Mr. Cohen, Ms. Norton, Mr. Ted Lieu of California, Mr. Lowenthal, Mr. Lynch, Mrs. Napolitano, and Mr. Moulton).
Full bill HERE

THIS IS WHAT ITS COME TO; Raul Grijalva put in plugs for Lion King the movie in his opening remarks. (can anyone say, clueless?)

SCI joined with more than thirty other hunting and conservation groups in a letter to the committee opposing H.R. 2245. We should leave the decisions on African wildlife management to the respective African authorities in range countries instead of pretending that politicians in Washington know better.”

At the hearings were representatives from Zimbabwe that shot the above American politician down;

Ms. Patience Gandiwa, the Executive Technical Advisor to Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, QUESTIONED what would happen if the CAMPFIRE Program and similar programs ceased in Zimbabwe? Campfire program link

She began by noting "The government of Zimbabwe is deeply concerned about this bill which has misleading ideas from those who are presumably doing conservation in theory...NOT in practice." she went on a rant against the Bill and finished with, "the Cecil act represents another form of violating outr human rights, dragging our people who are bearing the brunt of living with this dangerous wildlife extreme poverty as they have limited reparations. "

She refuted the very name of the bill, " for the local people, it was just another ordinary lion not famous at all, it is not in our culture to give wildlife nmaeanyway and personify them like human beings"

THE GOOD GUYS WON THIS ONE.

IMO, We should remember the folks underlined above involved in pushing this total waste of time and money come election time...

Yeah thanks for that clear list Elkstabber.

Worth noting the folks on that list have been pushing this a few times trying to get some traction.

I get that most hunters want nothing to do with politics....but if all of us dedicated a tiny bit of effort to our cause- Hunters are formidable as a group....divided we are weak/ nothing.

Make no mistake about it. If this group were to be successful in gaining control of African animals they will seek to ban more in the US/Canada.

I think it is rather arrogant and unethical for the laws in the US to affect those just trying to survive in other countries. We really should just mind our own business.

That means first of all that anybody that can vote against these clowns needs to get all their friends to vote against them too.

Yeah, I'm not an African hunting guy....but its the mindset of these anti hunters we have to protect against and educate the general public...........timing this with the release of "Lion King"???? Really?

They think of these animals in Disney terms....its so far from real world that it's ridiculous.

Bills like this are the worst kind of paternalism. Some jackass politician and his ilk in Arizona think they understand the incredibly complex situation on the ground in a land they’ve likely never been to, and one that, even if they did visit as a tourist, could never understand what life is like “on the ground.”

Kenya banned hunting in 1977, period. Go look at what happened to the animals after that - why? Because the problem was never hunting. Tanzania banned hunting, then reopened it and they currently have the largest population of lion in Africa. Why?

There is a sentimental (and wrong) idea that local, rural Africans sit around talking about how great and beautiful the animals are, nope. They are too busy trying to simply exist. Life for rural Africans is HARD, it makes our most poverty-stricken citizens look like kings. Running water? If you are lucky. Food? If you can grow enough. Healthcare? Don’t get me started. Keep this in mind: in 1980, the population of Kenya was 16 million, today it is 40 million

The point is that the stress on African animals, ALL African animals by human encroachment into wild habitat is unbelievable. We should consider all means to ensure wild habitat stays wild, if that means a lion here and there are killed for the greater good of the rest of the species, fine.

Meru park in Kenya used to be game rich, it was where George Adamson raised/rehabbed his lions. In the 1980s it was almost completely shot out by Somali shifta (bandits) who ultimately killed George. Only now have the animals populations returned in numbers that will draw a tourist. Had there been regulated hunting of the area with proper anti-poaching patrols and support, the 1980s slaughter would have likely never happened. But when the hunters left, a void was created and was subsequently filled by some evil bastards.

I don’t live in the fantasy world that the answer to every animal issue is hunting. But when you see what has happened right under your nose and have talked to people who were there, on the ground before AND after the hunting ban in Kenya, well, you start to realize that of all the options available to help solve the problem, sustainable hunting combined with updated fencing and farming techniques done in association with (not in spite of), and to the day-to-day benefit of, local communities has proven successful and should never be taken off the table. Out of the box thinking has to happen here, else the crush of human existence on wild lands will, in time, simply squeeze the life out of the most incredible game fields on the planet.

I can't be the only one who thinks its more than a little maternalistically racist for a bunch of rich leftist Americans to think they know what's best for Africans. I suppose its the "good kind" of racism though since it comes from the left.

It's only racism when the cops are enforcing the law, or a conservative says or does something. At least that's what the liberal playbook says.

I have been fortunate enough to hunt across the pond several times. When it comes to iconic species like lions and elephants its a rally cry for animals rights groups. It also not a liberal or conservative issue, as evident by the Presidents comments and lack of changes at USFWS regarding permits to import sport hunted trophies , especially elephants, lions and leopards.

What is truly condescending is that NGO's and people that don't have to live with these animals are tying to dictate to locals how they should manage their animals. People complain about crop damage from deer, imagine being a subsistence farmer and having your families crops raided by elephants.

I will say the response from those that live in Africa has been mind your own business. Namibia is a fantastic model of hunting paying for itself, and Botswana has recently reopened elephant hunting. Below is a quote from a doctoral student from Zimbabwe studying here in the US after the cecil incident (which by the way was a 100% legal hunt.)

"Did all those Americans signing petitions understand that lions actually kill people? That all the talk about Cecil being “beloved” or a “local favorite” was media hype? Did Jimmy Kimmel choke up because Cecil was murdered or because he confused him with Simba from “The Lion King”? In my village in Zimbabwe, surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been beloved, or granted an affectionate nickname. They are objects of terror….

When the lion was finally killed, no one cared whether its murderer was a local person or a white trophy hunter, whether it was poached or killed legally. We danced and sang about the vanquishing of the fearsome beast and our escape from serious harm….

Don’t tell us what to do with our animals when you allowed your own mountain lions to be hunted to near extinction in the eastern United States. Don’t bemoan the clear-cutting of our forests when you turned yours into concrete jungles. And please, don’t offer me condolences about Cecil unless you’re also willing to offer me condolences for villagers killed or left hungry by his brethren, by political violence, or by hunger.”
