I was considering a budget thermal monocular. I would like the quality to be good enough that i could identify types of animals. For instance difference between a cow, deer, coyote and smaller varmints. Ive seen ATN and FliR have some in the 5-600 price range. but a this point I dont know much about them and havn't looked though a budget one or an expensive one. Is it even worth my time considering something low end, I wouldn't want something that just shows me colored blobs.

Nothing in that price range will give you ID at any real distance. I’d suggest looking for deals on perhaps a pulsar helion or equivalent. Contact pulsar and inquire about demos or refurbs. I scored a fantastic deal on an XQ28 and it’s a great spotter.
