So most of us know that Tikkas typically run a little slow in the velocity department, but they certainly make up for this in accuracy. I know that you can get higher velocities with hand loads but what velocities are you guys seeing with factory ammo? Doesn’t matter of the caliber just curious overall.

Curious as well. Could it be the slower twist rates? I’m looking at a 300win mag and noticed Tikka’s stock barrels are 1:11 where as other manufacturers seem to run 1:10.

I was just reading about this. I’ve done ‘real world’ calibration with mine (shooting at known distance and calibrating my app to match) since I don’t have a chronograph. Here’s what I have seen:

Tikka T3X SuperLite 223 1/8:
Federal GMM 77gr: 2620

Tikka T3X SuperLite 6.5 1/8:
Berger brand 135 classic hunter: 2640
Hornady 143 ELD-X: 2660
HSM 140gr VLD: 2620

I’m wondering also what everyone else is seeing.

Hornady only advertises 2,700 for the ELD-X ammo so that isnt bad, but for the Berger ammo that seems a bit slow.

Don’t get too pent up on what the “box” says. Match chambers and 24” test barrels and all that jazz.

Just get your DOPE

I agree with you 100% but this is just more of a curiosity thing.

I have a brand new T3x 24" creedmoor I will be shooting this weekend. I can post numbers afterwards. I have 5 or 6 types of factory ammo laying around.

Hi,

I have a Tikka T3X SuperLite 6.5 1/8: My Magnotospeed with factory Hornady 143 ELD-X was on avg of 2652. My 10 shot load development found another high node at 2712 with low SD's and (3-shot) 1/4 MOA groups. Can't really tune the seating depth in a Tikka because of the long throat so may just let it ride.
Not sure why but they do shoot slow in general but also only have 150 down the tube.

Good Hunting!

That would be great! I have the same rifle and my chrono took a dump a few months back and I just havent got around to getting a new one yet. Would be interested to hear what you get.

I've shot the Hornady Precision Hunter 200 gr eldx through my tikka 300 WM and my chrono has it at 2820 fps, box says 2850 so it's pretty dang close.

I don’t know what’s left to “tune”. I’ve never shot any factory ammo out of any rifle that ever matched the manufacturers numbers.

Hey 16Bore
sorry, I was not clear I meant to "tune my hand loads", not the factory stuff.
This 143-eldx will not shoot anywhere close to 2712/fps I can push the 6.5cm.

Thats not too bad. Looks to be within about 75-100 fps of advertised velocities.

My experience with my 6.5 tikka superlite 24.3” is 2596 with factory 143 ELDX.

I believe in the 6.5C model specifically it is due to the chamber being long. When I measure with my 143 and OAL gauge and comparator I get my lands at 2.945”. The factory loads are loaded to SAAMI length and that’s a big jump and a lot of room for expansion.

If I load to 2.94” and use a slower powder like RL26 or Superformance I have easily been getting 2900fps with handloads and no pressure signs. My buddy with the same gun has done the same load up.

So maybe a curse (but they still shoot great) for speed in the factory stuff but pretty awesome for folks that are willing to load longer with handloads. Obviously the magazine in the 6.5C supports the longer loads too (2.97” is what mine will hold).
