Did tikka change the twist rate on their 30 cal barrels? I have a 300 Win Mag with an 11” twist and it looks like their newer models are coming out with 10” twists? If they did that’s nice.

No. Not on all .30 call offerings. Only the .300 Win Mag from what I have seen.

The others are still 1:11, including the .300 WSM.

That is affirmative. The model no. ends with R10...also the barrel will have 10” stamped on. Apparently Tikka is phasing out the 300 WSM from their product lines. This is new this year so there are still new 300 win mags out there with the old 11” twist rate.

Does the 1-11 twist screw with stability of longer bullets?
Yes but it’s kind of a moot point in the 300 win mag with Tikkas short mag box length. Any bullet needing a 10 twist will eat up too much powder capacity. If Tikka would offer the WSM with a 10 twist it would be a perfect candidate to send out for the throat to be extended.

Not a problem....replace the bottom metal and use an AICS mag.

I bought the Tikka T3x Compact 20” in .308 in Jan. 2023, the twist rate is 1:11. All previous 308 and ‘06 rifles I owned had a 10”twist with one ‘06 grouping 150, 165 & 180 gr loads very well and without a scope adjustment, so I was a little hesitant on a 11” twist. From what I had read the 11” twist is good for bullet weight weights in the 170-200 gr range so I bought the Tikka. This rifle groups very well with Rem Core -Lokt 180 gr SP ammo. I also tried Hornady Whitetail 150 & 165 gr Interlock loads which didn’t group well at all. Not sure if it was the bullet weight or Hornsby brand or both. I normally don’t like to go below 165 gr or above 180 gr for whitetail.

If anyone here on Rokslide has experience with shooting lighter bullet weights in the ..308 with an 11” twist I’d appreciate hearing your comments . I don’t reload anymore so my options will be limited probably.

I noticed the change to the Tikka website in Jan ‘24 regarding twist rate. Thanks

That turned out to be a very expensive mistake on my part….Scrapped my Tikka 300 win mag because of the action length limitation.

Unless you plan to shoot 200 gr or above, low drag bullets with a high BC, you won’t need a 1:10”. The shorter conventional bullets like the Accubond don’t need a faster twist. If you practice and hunt at a higher elevation you probably won’t need a faster twist at all if shooting less than a bullet weight like a 215 Berger.

Not very long. The newer Tikka 300 win mag barrel has a long leade to shoot the heavies with a 1:10” twist. But those bullets are very long. Needed 3.6” plus in the mag to shoot 200gr plus Low drag bullets. Spent $700 on AICS bottom metal and three mags. Was running 3.715” AICS mags that only got me 3.48”. Tikka opened up the ejection port on the T3x to single feed 3.6” COAL but that didn’t do me any good. Re-barreled the action to 6.8 Western and not looking back. I will eventually sell off the bullets and brass, dies for the 300 win mag. I got most of the $700 back but still lost money. I have re-barrelled all of my Tikka long action cartridges to short actions. I also shaved some weight off of each rifle and all are below 8.5 lbs.
