Wax serves as a protectant, waterproofs, and prevents fraying in case your string touches something. Sure, it is possible to over do it, but not waxing isn't great either.

I went to a 3D shoot one time knowing that rain was expected. I waxed my strings. It drizzled all day. One of the guys I shot with that I know, and is a very good shooter, did not wax his strings. His arrows were hitting way low, and water sprayed off his strings every shot. My arrows were hitting normal. That was really the first time I'd ever shot in the rain so wasn't sure how bows and wet strings would react. Now I always wax before elk season.
