Not much to do this time of year except look to upgrade and revamp gear lists. I'm trying to lose a little more weight and hopefully come in a little lighter. Planning for mid-September SW Colorado if no one has weddings or babies on the way this year (had to cancel last year due to that). I need to cut back somewhere, but need a little help figuring out where I can cut some gear. I may go on my own if my buddy can't make it work so I need to plan for worse-case scenario. Over-all I'm at 56 lbs 5 oz without food or water in the bladder and not counting the clothes I'll be wearing. I'm carrying a lot of weight in optics and a sidearm that I may ditch. Planning for 3-5 days out so I have to add in food for that. I should have pretty good water so I don't think I'll have to carry much more that what I need to get out there. Help me lose some weight!

Pounds are listed first...ounces second...it got all messed up when I copied and pasted.

Let me go over this and try to help you out. Especially if you are only going for 3-5 days.

I definitely agree. That is a ton of extra gear and I'll put a list together on this too because I can see from just a quick look about 5 lbs to cut.

For 3-5 days you do not need this extra clothing. This is what I would carry if it was a 10+day trip. Wear what you have in, and bring 1 pair of extra socks, and 1 pair of underwear if you don't like getting too funky. 3-5 days back isn't that far, and you can leave the spare clothes in the truck for swapping out with your first load of meat.

I made some edits to the list. You are carry a whole lot of extras brother. Take my advice as I used to do the same thing. Especially for your time frame for the hunt you are really heavy. You have a lot of light weight top of the line gear, trust it.

Here is my gear list this should give you something to go off of.

Pack: Kifaru BT1 *Custom cut*
Medium belt pouch/Grab it/Horizontal lashing strap
MSR 4 L Drom-lite for bladder
Gen2 Hanging meat bag

Sleeping Bag: Montbell S.S. UL Down Hugger 30 degree
Sleeping Pad: Klymit Static V
Ground Sheet: Tyvek 3x7 piece for laying under my pad
Shelter: Seek Outside LBO base (I'm hunting with a partner this year, so were each taking a LBO Base to have a castle in the backcountry)
8 MSR Groundhog Stakes (This may be too many, when we get out LBO Bases we'll refine how many stakes we take)

Food
6 days of food for a 7 day hunt I have about 1.5 lbs food per day, carrying around 9 lbs. It'll be homemade trail mix, tuna packets, tortillas, PB Bacon honey tortillas, dehydrated meals from home, granola bars etc etc.
Primus ETA Express stove with big fuel can for 2 people usually around 1.8 lbs.
Sea to summit spoon

Hygiene Kit:
toothbrush (cut in half yes I know im anal)
Travel toothpaste
Dehydrated sea to summit soap
Small rewetting contact drops (Im a lucky one who can sleep with my contacts in and not be bothered)
MSR Camptowel
1/2 roll of TP in a ziplock
Mini Deodorant stick

First Aid Kit
Quick clot gauze
3 4x4 gauze patches
Super Glue
Neosporin packets
Alcohol Wipes
1 Pair of Rubber gloves
Assorted pills (Ibu, advil, etc)
Mole skin
Zip Ties
Duct tape
Spot 2

My first aid kit weighs 9 oz's and can handle a lot of different issues

Kill Kit
Havalon Torch-6 replacement blades
5 Caribou Game Bags 24x28
1 pair rubber gloves
1 3mm Contractor trash bag
1 25 ft paracord
1 50 ft paracord
Marking ribbon wrapped around a pen

Comes in right at 1.5 lbs in a KU Pullout. I carry my extra paracord in here, the normal kit only has a 50 ft section in it, but the stuff is so useful I'll carry extra for hanging food or clothes.

Clothing *Not worn in*
Goretex Paclite rain coat in AP
Exefficio boxers
1 Pair Smartwool Merino socks
Kuiu Merino Beanie/Guide Beanie
Kuiu Guide Gloves
Kuiu Attack PAnts
Kuiu Spindrift

Lens cloth in a side pocket of the FHF Harness

Misc Gear

4 Lithium AA batteries
2 Bic lighters
Black Diamond spot headlamp

Bow: Strother infinity with the usual accessories, I carry 5 arrows and no extras in the pack.
Scott Mongoose Release
Spare release in the pack

What I wear in:
Kuiu MErino 180 top
UA Athletic shorts
Kuiu Gaiters
Merino Smartwool hikers
Saloman Quest 4d's
Kuiu Baseball hat

This list may even change somewhat because with my partner we may just carry 1 stove, 1 first aid kit, so on and so forth. I usually come in right around 42-45 lbs for 7 days loaded with 3L's of water, and including my bow on my pack. You've got similar gear, so keep it light man you'll appreciate it! Last year I carried a sidearm, spotter/tripod/ bunch of extras that I didn't need for my area and I walked in with 70 lbs loaded. Never again. I keep it under 45 lbs 3L of water, it allows me to go further, faster, longer, and I'm not whipped after my 8 mile hike in.

Holy man my kit is about cut in half of what yours is for 3-5 days.

-Imo dump (or severely cut) the 'hygiene kit' Take a tooth brush and tooth paste. Your gona stink, if it were 8+ days id say take soap and some of those extras, but for 5 days no way id carry any of that junk. tp and toothbrush/paste. The MSR is very multi functional and I always carry one.

-Ditch the tyvek and just run the bivy unless your going to the prarie where everything wants to poke a hole in your stuff.

-First aid kit, clean it up a bit. No need for band aids, steri strips ect. I do put a set of tweezers and nail clipper in my first aid kit.
Duck tape antiseptic ointment, superglue, a little gauze, alcohol pads, some pills, EMERGENCY FIRE STARTING stuff(bring this it could save your life)! Keep it small and light.

Also ditch the stuff that's redundant from your first aid kit. Don't need a roll of duck tape if you have a bunch in your emergency kit.

- Ditch the saw unless your taking a stove and plan on sitting tight for a while

-Ditch the filter only if you know your area and know you can get good water, drops save a lot of weight.

-I wouldn't bother with the paper towel

-I carry 2 headlamps, 1 good bright one, and 1 small UL one. Ditch the flashlight and take 2 headlamps, you got a bow to occupy your hands in the dark along with the terrain.

-I never take a leatherman, but that's just me.

- 2 clips? 1 clip should be plenty if you wanna carry. I don't even carry a full clip when I carry 5 rnds for me.

-Lantern, id ditch it. Get a good headlamp that has a diffuser, it works just as well in your tent as a lantern.

-No way id carry the battery charger for a 5 day trip. If you NEED your phone id carry the battery pack but id ditch the charger.

-I carry a full set of raingear no matter where I got, especially if I don't plan on going to the truck for 5 days.

-Ill give you an idea of what I carry for clothing for 5 days. You have merino so id say 1 set of baselayers is plenty! Im assuming your talking earlier season bowhunting.
1 set of baselayer top and bottom (always on)
2 sets of socks, one on and one off.
Heavier merino top in the pack.
Inulating layer(kifaru woobie express for me, or arcteryx)
Attack pants, always on
Benie, gloves and neck gaiter
Raingear
A set of extra underwear, although sometimes I don't even take these.
Remember, your going to stink! no mater how many times you change.

-Id ditch the guide jacket and vest on earlier season hunts personally. Youd be surprised how warm you stay hiking in 180+230 weight merino. If anything take the vest. You have a chugach jacket for when you sit down and need to block the wind.

-Id leave the shoes back but that's just me, they may be nice, but if im hunting im not spending a lot of time in camp.

-cambelbak.... DONT trust it! Have another way to hold water. My preference is a MSR bladder (these wont pop easily on you) and a Nalgene bottle.

For 5 days only, id go hard and uncomfortable. You only have 5 days to hit it hard.

That's just my opinion on what I would look at doing. It aint fun if it isn't a little miserable!

But I can tell you, you will not be happy with a 60lb pack walking in. And that's not even counting food.

ohhiitznik, kifaru field chair! Iv looked at these and this may be my one splurge. One thing I hate is sitting down to eat or relax and not being comfortable, and after a day of hiking around I think that ill appreciate that 10 oz or whatever it is.

I like were this thread is going, hopefully some of the more experienced peeps will post up their stuff and how to get weight down. I just weighed my pack fully loaded with everything except food for 7.5 days. Put my bow on, 3 liters of water, optics, trekking poles, etc and I came in at 53lbs, figure once I have my food in I'll be at 63-64lbs. This fall will be my first hunt so I prob have a few things I can leave at my truck. My pack weighs 7.5lbs which I know I could drop 3lbs or so if I bought a new pack but I got this one for Christmas so it is what is is. My sleep system is probably on the heavy side, BA fly creek ul2 w/footprint, BA insulated air cored regular size, montbell spiral UL #0(no the ss just the 2011 spiral model). I plan on bowhunting in sept and going on a trip in either mid oct or nov and I know I don't need a 0degree bad in Sept but I dont plan on buying 2-3 diff bags/pads for diff seasons. I do have a wyoming saw and a kelty chair(similar to a crazy creek) but that is more of a comfort thing. 2 changes of undewear and sock, rain gear(russel apx L5) and a fleece top/pants mid layer incase I get cold. Katydyn vario and jetboil zip(1 can of fuel). Other than that, basic hygene stuff, kill kit, nothing to much with either of those

Heres a rough rough version of what ill carry on a 3-10 day hunt in warmer weather. Im sure ill forget a few small things

Pack for hunting
-High camp 2 on a bikini frame, the lightest opion
- 1 medium belt pocket for my tarp on the outside
- 1 small belt pocket on the belt
- E&E as a lid if needed
-grab it and a lashing strap

For a pack for scouting id leave the HC and take my spike camp and a KU long pocket or 2.

Shelter/ sleep system:
-Kifaru Paratarp + appropriate cordage, 6-8 stakes dependent on terrain
-ID bugaboo II bivy
-Kifaru Woobie express (also my insulation layer for glassing)
-zlite pad, may go with a neo air, may take both if im going to the prarie and the ground is sharp.

Food/ cook system:
Enough to feed me :) sometimes that is too much.
-MSR pocket rocket, 1 canister
-MSR titan kettle (canister nests perfectly and silently)
- Long sea to summit spoon that I miraculously havnt lost in 2 years!

First aid/emergency kit
Very minimal, all in a dry sac
-A few pills, in a pill bottle.
-duck tape wrapped around the bottle
-alcohol wipes
-antiseptic ointment, small small tube
-super glue
-tweezers (if theres cactus you will thank me for recommending this)
-nail clippers
-chapstick
-Fire starting gear, matches, some time of fuel, maybe an extra bic
-I also keep my spare cordage in here. Usually Iv got 50ft.

Kill kit:
Copy of the kifaru kit, except I take a fixed blade.

Other/misc gear
-Headlamps, petzl myo and rayovac cheap light one.
-Extra batteries, all AA lithium
-GPS, maps and a compass
-Drops or a filter dependent on the area and how well I know it. Coffee filters w/
-Nalgene, 32oz, wide mouth
-MSR 2l bladder (or 6l if im planning on sitting tight for a while)
-I want a K field chair!
-Any calls if I need them
-Bow repair kit if im going in deep
-trekking poles
-Hand full of lens cleaners in there somewhere.
-MSR towel (so many uses)
-Tooth brush/ paste
-a bic in my small pocket, and one In my pants pocket

Clothing:
On me,
-Baselayer top
-attack pants
-socks on my toes
-beanie/gloves in my pocket
-hat on my head.
-trail running gaiters
In the pack
-Baselayer bottoms
-Heavy merino top (230 kuiu this year)
-Inulating layer (woobie X as stated above)
-Raingear
-1 extra set of socks.
All in a dry bag.

Bow
optics vary so much based on what im hunting and where. But my binos are always on atleast.
don't take a camera, but I may change that maybe.

I clearly need to get my weight down. I carry a lot less crap than listed above, for 2-3 days, and i'm still 45 lbs or so. But I do have to pack in all my water. I need to weigh all my stuff and get on that geargrams site. A new pack will also be in my future pretty soon.

What kind of scale you guys use for weighing most of your stuff?

Can anyone post weights of what people are at for mid/late season hunts when the weather starts to turn colder/snow? I'm assuming most it's just adding a layer or two and more food, possibly a diff shelter/sleep system? I'm just curious how my weight stacks up compares to others for 7day mid/late season

I like gear grams, really cool IMO for a free site. Forgot to mention that that list i posted is a typical 3 day loadout with food and water. The longer the trip the only thing that changes is the amount of food. Adding in late season/winter stuff adds about 5-8lbs or so to my setup depending on conditions/area. Addig in 0f rated bags, and warmer clothes, gloves, etc. That also includes kahtoola microspikes and or snow shoes, and a white gas stove for melting snow.

A 3 season 3 day trip would weigh about 30lbs(28-32)including food and water.
A winter 3 day trip would weigh around 36lbs(34-38) including food and water.
My base gear stays the same for the appropriate season, only change is food weight. I figure about 1.5-2lbs of food per day for me, and so far that tends to track accurately on my hunts.

I appreciate the input and see now where I can cut some weight. I know for sure I'll drop the Sig, Wyoming saw, some base layers & a few things in my hygiene and first aid kits. Probably not take the small piece of Tyvek in the Kill kit, but kind of want to keep the one for the tarp just to protect the Synmat...then again, I might sacrifice something else and get a lightweight foam pad to put under the bivy. As thin as the Synmat is, it kind of scares me. I'll also take out the BD light and may take the Goal Zero kit out too, but have to think about it. Mine has worked really well to charge my cell phone. I'm also questioning my Camelbak water bladder...I may go with a bottles instead. I'll take out some of the stuff and weigh it to see how much I can save. I'm guessing about enough to cover my food and water. I'd like to be under 55 lbs with food & water.

I think you could cut your weight to 50lbs EASY, and probably down to 40-45 if you get serious about dropping weight if not even lower. Without even looking too deep at your list I see an easy 13lbs you can drop.

I just use a cheap postal/kitchen scale.

I agree 100%!

Dropping 13-15 isn't out of the question and wouldn't cost a ton of money.
