Truck Bed Organization

I’ve got a single cab truck with both a tool box and a camper shell. It becoming a problem trying to access stuff in the tool box since I have to crawl all the way in. I’m looking for a better solution for gear storage while still having the camper shell. The truck bed drawers seem promising but are expensive and possibly hard to clean come hunting season.

I looked at the decked drawer system but it was expensive and looks like it wastes a lot of space and you lose so much height with a shell on that it didn’t make sense. I use the big plastic tubs from Costco. They’re cheap and I can easily get get organized for different trips ahead of time. I use the same tubs to store gear in the garage. I keep a couple in the truck all the time with the typical stuff I might need should a day trip turn into more like a jetboil, mtn house, sleeping bag, set of extra clothes etc… if I need to use the whole bed to haul something they’re easy enough toss in the garage.I keep a broom handle with a hook on it to drag and push the boxes in and out so I don’t have to climb in. The whole system probably cost me $60

The Decked system is legit. I had probably the first one in Texas. Bought it early 2015. I miss it everyday since I sold it with my 2014 Ram 2500. I didn’t have a cap, but I put all sorts of stuff on top and in the drawers themselves. Including 6’ long, 8.5” OD, 600lb+ pieces of steel.

I never missed the “lost” freeboard. And it totally alleviates the crawling into your toolbox. Only other option you have are the swing out side boxes. Which become totally useless as soon as you put other stuff in the bed that prevents them from swinging out.

They are relatively expensive $1000-1200. But I had a Truck Vault quoted and it was 4x the price of the Decked system.

Decked system is legit. My wife had one in her last pickup. Wants one for her new truck. Very handy.

Decked with a higher than cab height shell, like an ARE MX.

How is the decked system with cleaning up after a hunt (blood, mud, dirt and whatever else), and will the water get between it and the bed?

They make some swing out boxes that look pretty robust and lockable, think they run 150$ off Amazon. Fits in between the gate and run above the wheel well slighty and hinges open over the tail gate. Pretty slick tbh depending on how much gear you need to carry. I thought about them for my 1st gen tundra.

This is what I use also. My old man stick, which is what I call my pole with hook on the end, is one of the best things I've made for my pickup. Seems a little more efficient and usefull that the drawer system for me.

Here the system i built its not perfect but it works.
The drawers are only 48"
I used 2x12s two length ways one across the from.
The front couple feet the plywood is loose and I use that like a tool box for things I don't use much.
The drawers are short to store muddy boots on the bed floor.

I quarter my animals and put them in coolers and keep a tarp for the head.

It gets wet and blood in there some but whatever.

I use an old 75qt igloo cooler. It ain't "organized" per-se but everything's in there & I don't lose any bed height. A 5' long yard broom handle with a big hook screwed onto the end helps with reaching in there (just remember to tie it to the tailgate so it can roll all the way forward 😉)

I had a bedslide in my work truck for a long time. Long bed f-250 with a shell. It was great. Very heavy duty, I could put rails on it and it would handle a half a cord of green firewood no problem. Really easy to organize totes and toolboxes on too.

Had a Decked drawer system and thought it was very good, but my dog crates wouldn't fit with the cap on. Using totes now ( I normally don't carry that much stuff), but may add a bed slide at some point.

I have a ram 2500 with a shell, Im an electrician and carry a lot of tools and material on a daily basis, I used to have a decked drawer system, it was nice, It does take up a lot of space, the 3/4 pull out was kind of annoying trying to reach in and grab the stuff past the pull out. 8 broke it in a few spots from carrying too much weight- but reinforced it with metal and still worked great, I didn’t like it for hunting because I would have to take everything out of the drawers/put back in.
I sold that and went to a bedslide, that combined with Milwaukee pack out boxes, all of my tools are in those, it’s easy to access everything and I can take them out quick to have an empty truck for weekend/hunting.

Only thing I would change is get a cargo glide with 100% extension.

you could get that and mount your tool box on it.

I had a decked system on my prior work truck. F250 with the higher ARE topper. I felt I still had plenty of room between the decked system and the topper. My coworker had a cargoslide and I really liked it as well. I'm conflicted on which way I'd go if I were to get one now. I didn't carry so much in the decked for work that it wasn't bad to swap to hunting and camping. I did feel it was quite a bit of wasted space though. Sorry to not have an answer, but just thoughts on two options...

Took pictures of my setup then forgot what thread I took pics for. I'll try this one. Bought this 4ft plastic tote that slides effortlessly on my lines. Has roughly 60 lbs in it. Wood frame bed on top. I can have both items out in under 1 min to haul wood or other gear.

Nice setup. Where can I find the four foot tote for sale? You don't happen to know the brand or part number? Thanks in advance!

Just saw this thread, figured I’d share my build in case anyone wants to go the DIY route. It’s been amazing for camping and also made the truck bed far more useful with my camper shell. I based it off this build on YouTube and added storage on the sides:
