Tons of threads on here already for backpack hunting, etc. But I haven’t seen one yet specifically geared toward what you carry on your vehicle. Figured we might as well start one.

I’ll post mine

Type of hunt: Elk

Method: Spot and stalk, mostly spike camping but able to “glamp” for a few days to recharge or hunt from the truck.

Season: General

State: MT

I’d like to know what size truck bed everyone has. Including yours for this list. Hard cap, roll up cover?

We have 3 guys going on a mule deer trip from the east coast and between the coolers, packs, truck necessities, etc it seems like space runs out quickly.

I’ve got a crew cab short bed Tundra with a hard cap. It does indeed get tight. Had two last year and we were tight, I wouldn’t want to do any more without a trailer. Going with 3 this year but we have a long bed dually with a high cap so hopefully we will be good.

I put a shower bag and foldable wooden floor mat in. Freshen up, when humping for 5-6 days does wonders!

For us it will be me and my buddy. I have a crew cab short bed F350 with a canopy we will be using for the trip. We took it on a few spring bear hunts this year, first trip was 3 guys and I had my tonnoue cover on and it was a pain trying to get everything to fit. Next couple trips I had the canopy and it was much nicer and tons of extra room and we took the same amount of gear minus the cooler set up changed from a 150qt igloo and 65qt Rtic to my 210qt Yeti.

For the Montana rifle hunt we will be bringing the 210, adding the wall tent and a Honda 2200 generator plus gas. With 2 guys I think we will still have room with the added height/space of the canopy. I looked for a used canopy for about 6 months and finally started asking dealers if they would sell just the canopy and scored a fully loaded color matching ARE canopy for $500.

I like to throw in the hammock and a sleeping pad/bag for naps or a quick spike camp when a tent is too much work for a night

I like to carry two types of sleeping bags in the truck in case the weather changes, i carry two first aid kits one for the field and a more comprehensive one for the truck. Since you will be in MT, i'd consider bear spray and a good sidearm. Also all the coolers you will need for meat storage and bear canisters for a clean camp. I also would carry chains, recovery boards, snatch straps, hi lift, shackles etc for recovery. I also carry long range walkie talkies and my inreach in the truck as well.

Don't forget to take some rope, might have to hang food or game up in a tree if griz are in the area. Also, when we went to Montana this Spring we used headlamps alot around camp and when packing my bear out and I wished I had brought a better one and a spare or two

One thing I’ve added is a “base camp” sleeping bag and pad.

After my first pack out this last year my sleeping bag, tent, etc was still 3 miles in at my spike camp.

I wasn’t about to hike back in that night to grab it. Drove into town to get a hotel, which was well worth it at the time. That said it would’ve saved a bunch of time to sleep at the truck that night in a spare bag.

I sleep in my truck. I have a super crew cab. With the passenger seat pushed all the way back and laid all the way back it’s pretty comfortable. I also keep a spare sleeping bag in there so I don’t have to unpack my backpack. My list is on my phone so I can find stuff easily. I keep it packed up and ready to go so it takes no time to move spots. I also keep my gear packed up and ready to load so it takes very little time to head out the door. My pioneer gear lives in my toolbox.
