Hey Roksliders, I'm leaving in the morning with my 15-year-old son Dylan for his 2nd season Colorado deer hunt. His season is from 10/30-11/7. My best friend also has a 2nd season tag in a nearby unit so we may swing down to help him if Dylan tags out early.

After that, I make the long drive home to drop the camper and pick up my dad for 3rd season. We both have tags in the same unit as Dylan and will be hunting from 11/13-11/19. Needless to say, I'm having a hard time focusing at work today!

Yesterday we did a final zero check on the rifles.

I finished loading up this morning and picked Dylan up from school early.

We left town about 11 and it didn't take long for him to grab a nap.

We made it through Washington and Oregon.

Now we're stopped for the night at a rest stop east of Boise. We'll be hitting the road early tomorrow and should be at camp tomorrow afternoon.

What a great trip. I was hoping for the same and got clipped by the points gods. My buddies had 5+ points on the 3rd season we wanted and I was only plus two and I’m the lone man out. Good luck!

Bummer! That happened to a lot of people this year. I missed on two WY tags that I should have drawn.

We made it to camp a little after 4 pm today. Set the camper up and took off for some scouting.

Dylan looking at some deer on private.

We spotted one pretty decent buck he would gladly shoot if it moves onto public ground.

Tomorrow is the opening day so we had a fancy dinner and plan to hit the sack early.

Busy morning. We hunted the edge of the private to see if any bucks would move to the public. Nothing at first but then a few does and a small buck headed our way.

Not long after we saw a really nice buck walk directly below us. We tried to get a shot but he never stopped.

We moved down the ridge for a better view in hopes of spotting him bedded. The guides hunting the private drove through and pushed the big buck all the way to the other side of the ranch. The wrong direction for us.

A little later I spotted an old, narly buck bedded. If he was a little bigger Dylan would have shot him.

A few minutes later I spotted another good buck bedded and Dylan set up in case he was a shooter.

Dylan watched for a while and decided the buck was a shooter. The buck was laying broadside at 217 yards. Dylan made a great shot and the buck never got up.

We are heading down shortly to put our hands on him!
