From what I’ve read from CPW is winterkill hasn’t been significant the last few yrs in gunnison basin. I just saw their YouTube ungulate report for the basin in their website and they were clear that winter die off was not much below average in 17 or 18. Now I’m not discounting numbers are lower but I’m not sure the reason
16-17 winter kill was a big die off. 17-18 wasn't bad at all.

I Drew a second season tag last year.
Took 6 resident points.

3 day of scouting.
8 days of backpack hunting.

#1 you better be in really good shape.
#2 be prepared to see a lot of other hunters.
#3 Don't expect any monsters Saw nothing bigger than 140"..... I shot that one.
#4 you will need to be able to shoot longer range.
#5 buy the best glass and use it A LOT.
#6 more of #5
#7 get as far off the roads as you can.
#8 dress warm We saw 10 degrees many nights.

A second season 54 buck tag does not take 6 points, it takes 0 points, maybe 1. The hunting reflects that, bunch of hunters and finding big deer is difficult. But you can get a tag easy

Thanks for the hunt intel. Looks like you hunted very hard. Congrats on harvesting a buck.
