There’s a Honda Pioneer 700 four seater for sale near me... buddy says the 700 is too weak once loaded with gear and three kids. Any suggestions on engine size? I’ve been thinking of getting one myself.

Definitely too small for a four seater. Stick with the 1000’s if your planning on getting a 4.

Personally, Honda gets my vote (and my money) on this one if your looking for an all purpose machine. You might consider looking at the Pioneer 1000. Do your research on Hondas DCT vs the CVT that is found on most other SXS (Polaris, Canam, etc). Also, if you have a family or friends that like to jump in on occasion, look at the Pioneer 1000-5. As far as the belt driven machines (cvt) the Yamaha Wolverine has a really good reputation.

This is very subjective and depends on your needs. I spent a lot of time researching two years ago. I have tough terrain to our family cabin and have 2 young kids so didn’t like the idea of atvs anymore. I like atvs better by myself but the side by side is awesome. I was deciding between the Yamaha Wolverine 4 seater and the Honda pioneer 1000-5. The Wolverine was more comfy but the back seats slid forward, so they took up a bunch of cargo space. The Honda on the other hand has seats that fold into the bed. They are not as comfortable as the Yamaha back seats but I love that I still have a full functioning tilt bed vs the Yamaha. If I was mostly trail riding I would have went with Yamaha. As I mostly hunt and haul and occasionally trail ride, the Honda got my money too. It’s a beast, super quite too. Only complaint is how tall the roof is and the heat that comes up in the summer. Although it’s nice in the winter. Polaris has a big following too, but they didn’t offer anything that fit the bill for what I wanted. Kawasaki has a side by side more similar to Yamahas Wolverine, but is loud as heck.

Thanks everyone. Just an update to this post, I’ve since switched my focus to ATVs. Still can’t pull the trigger....

As mentioned earlier COVID has apparently caused an ATV shortage. The two shops I talked to last weekend said their sales went up 300-500% and they can’t get any confirmation when they’ll get new inventory... seems like there oughta be some good deals on used ones next year.

Honda pioneer 1000 hands down. We’ve got 2 1000-5s, and 2 Polaris. No comparison. Polaris does have more accessories but the pioneer is getting popular enough it’s starting to have tons of after market accessories.

Keep in mind that the Honda 500 and 700 Pioneers don’t even have a low gear. The only pioneer that has versatile gearing is the 1000. A 700 loaded down with no low gear is gonna lug.

Hey thanks for the advise - was looking at the 700 decked out at $9k... seemed like a steal but it don’t pass the rokslide sniff test

In the ATV world there is only one that I would buy and that is a Yamaha Grizzly. I have had several and consider them the very top of the pile. SxS's are a different matter because there are so many brands and models it is tough to figure out what a person wants. When I am ask what UTV to buy from my friends it takes me about 45 minutes of visiting with them to narrow down where they want to ride, how they want to ride, how much they want to ride, are they going to want to haul cargo, how they are going to haul it to go riding, and finally what their budget is. There is no simple answer to the SxS question.

I have a Honda Pioneer 700 2 seater that's been bullet proof. Admittedly here on the prairies we don't tax them the way they would be in other locales...

Difficult to beat a Honda. Just sayin.

I'd still buy within my budget as most stuff is pretty decent these days.

My dad bought Honda pioneer and offered it to me for hunting. I don’t use it, because It can’t go anywhere my 96 Tacoma can’t go and I can haul more and it has a heater for those late season hunts. I don’t drive it off roads so it was of no real value for how I hunt.

Be sure to check out trail width restrictions before using it on forest service trails.

My dad has a new Ranger and rides with a bunch of people in northern MN. They group had them all. Over the years, they have all migrated to Polaris. For some it was reliability, others it was cost, others it was performance, but they all switched. As far as I know, they are all happy with the decision. I recently bought a Ranger 570 and love it. The only thing I would change is to add more storage, but I will figure that out.

I am by no means a seasoned western hunter, but I have a Ranger 07 700 XP that has never made the trip. The machine is a great machine and super capable, however I usually Bivy hunt and I have yet to hunt a place where an over 50" machine helps me at all, so we usually take an atv or two to cut down on the walk from the truck to wherever we are going which is usually a mile or two up a mountain on a <50" trail. then we dump off into the other side.

If you are primarily getting it for hunting and only really need it to hold 2 people i would look strongly at the <50" options which if I recall is only the Honda pioneer 500 correct?

If you are relocating regularly or going back and forth to basecamp, the SXS will cut down a tun on time but is only useful if they are >50" trails.

I would also mull over a 2 up ATV. I have one of those (Polaris 500 09) and it works really good for 2 people. Lots of elk quarters have been hauled back to camp on that one!

Little bit late to the party, but I’ll chime in. I’ve got a 2020 CanAm Defender HD8 Max and have been really happy with it. I added a bumper with a winch and had a buddy build an aluminum rack for the bed.

It will do 60mph down fire roads all day without beating you up and save wear/tear on your truck. It’s big, but still smaller than a truck and great for trails. I spend most of my time hunting in the Texas Panhandle, Trans-Pecos, and Central Texas. On those ranches, it’s ideal.

Ive also had it in CO, NM, and AZ. No issues anywhere but keep trail width restrictions in mind.

I hunt waterfowl quite a bit as well. Marshes are easily passable provided you don’t get deeper than the floorboards. If the bottom is too slick, you’ll get stuck regardless of what model, tires, or whatever else.

The biggest advantage is saving wear and tear for me. Most of the SxS are mountain goats and great for those washed out trails and roads. Throw a winch and storage organizers in the bed and you won’t ever regret it.

Last- it’s nice to be able to pull a trailer. I’ve pulled the CanAm several places with the truck, unloaded and unhooked from the truck, then hooked that 14’ utility trailer to the UTV and hauled everything from firewood to blinds, dozens of goose decoys, atv’s, deer, pigs, corn, and anything else you can imagine. That’s convenient.
