I have an AR with 16 inch stainless barrel that currently has a 3-9x40 VXR patrol on it. I'd like to upgrade the scope to something this is a bit more versitle. I'd like to have a bit more field of view on lowest power and some more magnification on the high end so I can dabble in some long range shooting. I'd like the scope to have an illuminated reticle and an elevation turret with a zero stop. On paper the Nightforce nx8 2.5 - 20 looks perfect except for the weight. I'd like to stay a bit lower on weight then 28 Oz. Is there any other options I should look at?

Doesn't exist.

Try a VX5HD 2-10x ZL2 FireDot if you want upgraded glass and turrets. Maybe a 3-15x, or VX6HD.

They're coming out with the new VX3HDs with upgraded zero lock turrets and many have illuminated reticles/dots.

Unless it’s a precision rig, I’m pretty much running 1-6’s or 1-8’s. That will give me hits on steel past 400 with ease. 9-10 power should get you some distance just not target detail. Another option is more magnification and use an offset red dot

It is a precision rig to me. With the right ammo it will hold 3/4 inch groups or better at 100. I would like to start shooting out to 500 or 600 yards. Im looking to pick up some mk 262 77 grain ammo and see what it will do at longer ranges. To be clear I don't feel I would need 20x on the high end like the Nightforce has. Was thinking a 2-12 or similar would be good. I also believe the vxr patrol is actually 3.3 power on the low end so even a true 3x on the low side might be a bit better for close range.

I am a huge fan of my NF NX8 1-8x on my AR. I have taken it out to 725yds on my grendel and out to 600yds with my NF NXS 1-4x on my sbr.

Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42. About 25% more FOV on the low end, a little more magnification on the high end, weighs 20 oz, comes in MOA or MIL, red or green illumination, good zero stop, dead nuts tracking, bombproof.

I run a Kahles K18i

Shot it out to 500 at a Carbine class. A quality 1-8x24 really lets you stretch it.

I'm a huge fan of my Nikon P-223 3-9x40. I think I paid 200 for it and they were running a promo where the nikon p-series mounts were included. I liked it enough that I bought a second one for one of my other rifles.
