Well here I go . I decided to build 2 semi custom rifles on vanguard actions.
.257 and 28 nosler.

I went with OMR prefit barrels
257 is a 1-8 twist 24 inch
28 nosler is 1-8 twist 26 inch

McMillan stocks

action and barrels are at the gunsmith now. I will keep this updated as I make progress.

What was the turn around time on the barrels ? Theres a used Vangaurd in 257 i am eyeing

It was quoted at 8 weeks, but took 16.... I will be selling my factory 257 barrel that I had threaded and a break installed.

actions and barrels are done. Off to get fitted and bedding done. 3-4 weeks and I should have them back.
Hope to get them done in time for season. I have a bull elk desperation tag that I plan on hunting early September (runs august 1-September 30th)

but most of all..... I have a desert bighorn tag that opens November 20th. Planning to set cameras this Saturday!! Should be a fun season.

Well a little set back. Every thing got lost and then found. They were missing for 10 days, but showed up today at the smith to have bedding done and final fit in the stocks, only set me back 3 weeks.

Can I ask what smith you are using?

I am using 2! Lol. 1 here in Nv for action barrel work, another in WI for stock work.

I know why people just buy a custom built rifle and let 1 person deal with all the problems!! It has been a lot of work!

Well it’s been a while , but stocks are done.

Well here they are!!
Going to the range tomorrow about 3pm . Plan to be there until dark. Hope to put about 60 down each tube and have the broken in, dialed in, and maybe shoot a little long range ( they have 300-550-850-1050 yard steel targets) it’s been almost 11 months overall.

Hope they shoot good ! I have a bull tag, and a desert sheep tag!

I'm curious what they weigh? We have vanguards from 6 1/4lb to 7 1/2lbs and they all shoot well.

They are not the lightest rifles. As they sit, right at 9lbs.

Look great! Just curious why you used prefit barrels and a gunsmith to install them? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? If you’re gonna use a smith anyway you could have used any barrel out there with chamber reamers and probably not had the wait.

I probably could have done it my self, I just did not have the time, tools and I needed the bolt machined for the 28 nosler, so he did it all fairly reasonable.

well it will have to be afternoon range session. But every thing is packed up and ready to roll!

I am excited to shoot the rifles and then start playing with some loads we have worked up.

Vortex H-ST 4-16. Not the best , but it’s what I had for now.
