What 2-3 calibers would you pick?

I'd go with a .223, 6.5 Creed, and 300 Win Mag. That said, I still have a use for a .22, a pistol and at least one good shotgun so I'm glad I dont have to limit how many firearms I own.

My 3:

22lr for squirrels (10/22)
223/5.56 for coyotes (ar-15)
270 win for deer (savage 111 FCNS)

I hunt in central NY and only hunt those species as of right now. I plan on hunting bigger things (elk, caribou, moose, ect.) and will be getting a larger caliber (most likely a 300 win mag).

If I could do it over again, I would get a 30-06 instead of the 270 so I can use heavier bullets for my occasional hunt out west for the bigger deer species (which will be in my future if things go according to plan). We will see. I may just end up keeping my 270 or trading/upgrading it depending on my budget.

Everything up to elk maybe even elk- 25-06
Elk, moose, maybe even Grizz- .300 Wby Mag
45-70 as the back up/ for brush busting

Forgot about small game .22 then instead of 45-70

222 Rem, 280 Win, and too many good choices in between... 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 6mm Rem, 25-06, 7x57?

I'd probably just stick with what I've got.
223 in a Ruger American
7-08 in a Tikka SS
300 WM in a Tikka SL

The only one I would'nt mind switching up is the 7-08 and going to a 6.5 PRC just for shits and giggles.

My system:
243 - predators, blacktails, loaner rifle 6lbs loaded (kimber 84m)
6.5prc- muleys, elk , sheep, goats 7lbs loaded (kimber 8400)
9.3x62- moose, bison, bears 9lbs loaded (sako 75)

280ai is probably more versatile than 6.5prc, but I doubt animals could ever tell the difference.

Just curious what 2-3 calibers you guys would pick to hunt everything from moose/elk/bear down to deer/antelope and then down to cougars/coyotes?

Bonus: what guns would you select. Seems like most here are high on tikkas

.204 Ruger in a micro-scaled action (CZ, Howa, Sako), 11 twist, single-stack d-mag

6mm Creedmoor in Defiance med-length action, 8 twist, AI d-mag

7mm WSM in Defiance med-length action, 8.5 twist, blind mag

This. I could swap the creed for a 308 but I do prefer the creed. I might take the 223 as an AR but you can’t hunt them or carry them everywhere so maybe not.

Depends on if I get to reload for it or have to buy ammo off the shelf. I've got a 308 where my reloads are almost equivalent to a 30-06 muzzle energy and it's a 20" proof barrel. Currently playing with some 300 rum reloads out of a 31" kreiger barrel. Thinking of rebarreling it to a 338 edge.

257 Weatherby - Coyote, Deer

300 Weatherby - Bear, Elk, Moose

6.5 PRC - All of the game above and a lot cheaper to shoot! (Waiting for the Ruger American Go Wild to be available)

I’m pretty satisfied and well covered at the moment with my 3 main hunting rifles.

.223AI, Rem sporterish barrel @ 22”, MCMillan MR gelcoat.

6.5x47L, Kimber Montana,Lilja factory dupe @ 23”

7 SAUM, Kimber Montana, Lilja 8400 Mod contour @ 24”.

Plenty of others out there just as good or better though. I’ve figured out that most cartridges are more alike than different at the ranges I hunt 90% of the time.

A ton of good rifle options out there as well now. I’ve had good luck with Kimbers and like to build on 700s.
