I appreciate all the input. For a while I thought it would be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole to take it elk hunting but I’m glad to here you guys wouldn’t hesitate to take it in the backcountry as it is.

Shoot it for anything whitetail and bigger. Doubketap ammo makes a load with 235gr Barnes TSX bullets that are 3100 at the muzzle. Those can kill about anthing with good distance on them.

Good to know you can load it light enough to shoot whitetail, thanks.

Load it with 260's and hunt stuff with it. It is a good platform if you want to customize it, but that is more up to your wife, I think. It is a hunting rifle, you should just hunt it on occasion, and enjoy it.

Bell and Carlson make a good stock if you want to swap and keep the wood in good shape. May shave weight, may not. The CZ stocks are usually on the heavy side with dense wood.

If you want to go custom, talk to Wayne at American Hunting Rifles. He is a CZ550 specialist and builds some of the nicest I've seen. He also offers a fiberglass stock if you want to shave weight.

This is along the lines of another question I had. Would you take a wood stock in the backcountry or do you think it would put too much wear on it? It may seem like a stupid question but I’ve never done it before...

I have several guns that meet your question. They have been passed to me to care for until I pass them to the next generation. I shoot them every now and then just to make sure they have a hole in the end of the barrel. I have friends who are now getting older and have no one to pass their guns to, so my son has been on the receiving end of several heirlooms that they have passed onto him. Hunt with it, range day with it, or just take it out every now and then and show your friends. You have been chosen to carry on a legacy.

I hunt with both stock types. Six of one half dozen of the other. If it has really nice wood, or keeping the wood in good shape is important, swap it. If neither is the case, hunt it as is. It will get some scratches and dings. Fact of life. Today's wood finishes are tough, and last a long time. With reasonable care, it will last a lifetime of hunting. There are many wood stocked rifles out there that have been there and done that for several generations of hunters in a family.

The whole synthetic stock thing is a relatively recent development. Folks have been strapping wood stocked rifles to packs for well over a hundred years.

Some folks get worked up about wood stocks and scratches/dings. Those are called memories, IMO.

If you are never going to use it......

You will get more out of it by selling and using the $$ to buy a keepsake piece of jewelry for your wife to remember him by.
