when reasearching and building a play for a hunt?

We have discussions on this regularly and I was curious what others thought.

So what do you look for to define that? From the data from surveys to the map scouting, what is the most important?

The balance of critter numbers/critter quality/pressure. Most important to me is to figure out a way to avoid other hunters. I like people who hunt, just not when I am hunting in the same area as them.
I understand that completely.

1. does it look like fun?

2. can I get the time off?

3. can I afford the tag?

Everything else is just a matter of getting there and figuring it out.

Not necessarily in this order.

Can I get the tag?

Can I hunt mature animals? (5 years plus and there are more than 1)

Access?

Terrain? I am not 20, but I'm also not 80.

This is for LE tags where pressure is less of a concern. For general season tags, I hunt in MT on a non-res native tag and hit my old haunts. If I'm unsuccessful in the draws throughout the west, which is the norm, I might hit NM on a unit wide LO or CO OTC.

Unit choice in CO is based on elk numbers, terrain, popularity of the unit (both hunter and recreationalist), and if I've been there or not. I like to see new country. I have zero expectation of success, so that helps.
