Love the style of an English setter. I always have a few but only this one at the moment. I have also had Gordon setters. I hunt ptarmigan and grouse in wild country. Best thing about bird hunting is that you can get as far back as your legs will carry you

I have a German Shorthair/ Black lab mix that gets after it hard. I've shot a bunch of upland and jump shot waterfowl for the last 4 seasons. Couldn't imagine a better dog, for me at least. Plus, she's a big time snuggler

I love my Chessie. He's a great hunter, and a very loyal family dog. I would love to have a Boykin one day as well.

Grew up raising, hunting, and showing Plott’s with my dad. Over time, access to enough land to run them dried up as did my free time, so the number of dogs slowly dwindled over time. We still have one left that was retired as a young dog after some issues with coyotes one night. He’s a tad over 14 now and enjoys life living on my parents farm chasing cats around.

If I were to ever move west where bears and lions were available, I’d no doubt find a way to get back into the hound game. Once Hank goes, it’ll be the first time in 25+ years (or about as far back as I can remember) that I won’t own a Plott.

In the future, I’ll probably be looking at getting a dog for blood tracking. A breed that the wife will buy off on though is the tricky part, but leaning towards a DD or a Griff possibly (she likes the “scruffy ones”).

Labradors, because I like their demeanor. my father in law hunts GSPs and they are fun to hunt over but a little to high strung for me. hunting his dog (shotzie) and mine (diamond) together is always interesting, but they actually compliment each other well.

My favourite hunting partner, my chessie. Smothering at times, always ready to hunt, even though at times she was a real handful. Do have to give an honourable mention to Norwegian Elkhounds. Grew up raising them and definitely some of the best dogs I've been around.

I hate to say favorite. Only had one bird dog. 19 month old GSP. I got her for Chukar/Hun hunting. She's doing great on those. Ranges a few hundred yards away. Holds point. On our last hunt she pointed 6 different coveys. I got her nose on shed scent when she was pup and she's finding those in the field!

That's a hard toss up. I've owned alot of great dogs in the days but I sure love my black lab and catahoula. The labs has such extreme versatility. He has a better understanding of my needs and wants. He has taught himself several commands just by my body language. Unfortunately he is a house dog and baby sitter now days. But a great one at that. I never seen a dog with such patience with a child especially compared toy catahoula. She didn't want a thing to do with my kid. Lol. But the catahoula has a grit and drive of power it's astonishing. The dog was pulling coyotes at 8 months. Blowing past them with that cow dog agility. I've now moved on and no longer own this dog. Which is one that will be hard to replace in the future

This is Echo. I got her in the summer of 2015. She's been an absolute joy to have around. Admittedly I should have done more training with her but a cross country move and not having a home for awhile cut into that. Regardless she turned out to be a good meat dog. If she can see the bird go down, she's on it. If she smells it, she'll find it. She's even blood trailed deer for us after a heavy snow. She's great at home and with the new born. I couldn't ask anything more out of this dog. 20181201_142215.jpg

My personal favorite hunting dog is the German Shorthaired Pointer. They are the most versatile breed in my opinion their style and grace are topped by none in my opinion. The only con I could ever complain about is the hyper fits of non stop energy. I operate a small kennel in Illinois and have a great success. I breed for results not $. The dog below is Rooster my male. Check out our facebook @spoonrivershorthairs
