What kind of display case is this?

I don't remember where I saw this but thought it was a cool idea. Anybody have an idea what this case/display was originally used for?

They used to sort & store wooden & lead typesets in the drawers. I have a few & one still has the font, letter, & point sizes on the dividers... You can find them at antique stores. Really nice drawers will be upwards towards $70, I go for the $15-25 fixer-uppers
