Ive formed at least 500 257roy cases from 7mm rem brass over the years. If you struggle with components, its a one pass deal to get 270 roy from rem mag brass.

I shoved a 100tsx through a Roosevelt elk at a measured 400 yards. That thing folded like i spine shot it...

Passed through the lungs and offside humerus.

It's a way underrated lazerbeam. The 270 is no slouch either. I would be nervous with the 270 as the bullets are harder to come by.....and you simply MUST use tough bullets.

270 Wby all day for what you are doing.. Many, many critters from coyote threw elk have hit the ground for me using a standard 270 Win over the decades... Don't over think it

If you think the 300 is too much and the 6.5 might not be enough than that lands you right in the .270 - 7mm range. I am a big fan of 7mm mags on elk/muleys. That said, there's going to be many additions made to the 6.8mm bullet lineup in the coming years. Theres already a lot of 7mm bullet options.

With mule deer being the primary target the 270 mag might be the best option. For what its worth, I built my own full custom rifle in the last year. My intended uses was very similar to yours. I went with a 7mm mag (first 7mm WSM, now 7mm SAUM, long story), and downed my first bull elk at 325yds without any issues.

Truth be told, they are all good. Pick your poison. Many of those Weatherby Mags are true hard hitting calibers.

Keep in mind, the 257 was Roy’s favorite and he killed a rhino with it.

I've killed elk, deer(axis,M&WT), Aoudad, pronghorn, oryx, hogs etc with 115vld via 257wby. I don't think there is a finer cartridge for under 400 yards+-. If you want higher energy at longer range then there are better wby calibers

I have a LH 270 Weatherby MkV. Built in 72, ridiculously accurate. Since I've killed about 14 elk from 315-519 yds with a 270 Winchester, I wouldn't worry about the cartridge. For me it would be 270/300 or 7mm Wby in that order. But it depends upon what you want. Any of your options would be more than enough. Elk die quickly with good hits and tenaciously live with poor hits. They are Terminator tough animals when not hit well.

I love the .257 Wby and the .270 is a hard to beat Caliber that being said. If you would prefer the ultimate NA caliber I would go with the 300 Wby. I shot a moose with the 270.Wby Barnes TTSX a few years back at 327 yards and was not impressed. Bullet choices have a much better range And you can load down for smaller game and heavy for bigger game.
