Alright guys I am going to need your input. I had sent in my action for some work to a very well known shop in the west. I don’t want to start a problem so I am not going to plug their name(they seem like good people). However, prior to sending in my action I was quoted a 6 week turn around time with frequent updates. Well, 2 months have gone by with still no update. I did call a few weeks ago and they said I was next in line and it would get it done that week. I was having the bolt handle removed and a new one put on. I don’t feel like it should have taken this long but I am by no means an expert. The only reason I’m making this post is because about a month ago I sent them another part to be worked on and it was finished and sent back to me in 3 days. Should I call and get a refund so I can send it out to someone else? Please leave your thoughts, I’d greatly appreciate it considering I got a hunt coming up.

Gunsmiths are slow in general. A couple months I wouldn’t sweat it.

Honestly when I get a quote at a minimum I’d double it. At 12 weeks I’d start to get pissed.
It's just frustrating, especially when you have other smiths pumping stuff out for you.
But, ill take your advice and ask for them to send it back in May if I hear no update

Had a similar issue last year with Weatherby. Sent a rifle in to be checked and test fired 10 days after the “warranty” ran out. Was told 4 months. At that point, I started posting on a few forums. Suddenly, my rifle was done and on its way home.

Seems to me that posting names on forums produces magically fast results. Being slow is one thing that can be expected but outright lying isn't something any customer should be expected to tolerate.

I would just give them a call and ask for an update. Let them know you have a hunt coming up and that you are getting nervous about not having it back. The squeaky wheel gets the grease... especially in customer service.

I’ve had a barrel chambered, threaded, muzzle threaded, custom muzzle brake built and blended. Cerekoted in less time than it seems to take them to even take off my old bolt handle with an acetylene torch. Oh wait…. They haven’t even taken the handle off, it’s just been sitting in the box for the past 8 weeks

Trust me, a company would much rather an unhappy customer communicate with them vs not saying anything and losing future business. If you called a few weeks ago and they said yours was next, you have every right to call to get an update.

I requested an update they said they took off the handle, so hopefully it’ll be done soon. I guess there’s some issue going and they have no idea when it will be completed. I may just take it back and send it off somewhere else

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. That's how society is now. Seems people would rather conduct business that way instead of just being a man of your word and doing what you say, when you said you would do it.

I don’t want to have to complain to complete the service I’ve paid for

No one does. I blame the person who set the expectation with you (and then did not meet it). Not you for calling them out on not keeping their word. Is it complaining, or is it holding them accountable? All a matter of perspective....

What happened to people standing behind their word? If I tell you its going to be 2 weeks, I need to call you halfway through the second week to apologize and tell you its going to be 3 or 4 or whatever if I cant make that deadline. But the playbook today in nearly all things is to tell you a time, then have radio silence and put it on the customer to have to follow up. They put you in this position, not the other way around. Maybe they will be honest with the next customer, or learn how to communicate/manage expectations better (part of being a business owner).

I would call again to get another update. Just curious. Are they supplying the handle or did you? Might be a hold up especially if they are using PTG for the handle. Are they timing the bolt handle also?

I run a business as well, I have learned of you tell someone it’s going to take a couple weeks longer than you know it will, you buy yourself time if things go wrong and the customer is happier when it gets done early

It’s a normal handle they stock
