What’s in between a 6.5 Creedmoor and the Magnums?

Neither the 270 Win nor the 7mm-08 get you much more than the 6.5 CM.

The 6.5 PRC and 280 AI are a step up without “that” much more recoil. I’d lean towards the 280 AI for bigger game but I’d have no qualms about hunting large game with the 6.5 PRC.
What is the difference between a 6.5 prc, .280 ai and .270 win?

It sounds like a 280 AI scratches the itch. It almost perfectly covers the gap between where the 6.5 leaves off to where the magnums start.

Have enough rifle weight or muzzle device to reduce the recoil to suit.

I've been shooting a 6.5 creedmoor because I got a slamming deal on a new Tikka. It's always been my plan to re barrel at some point. When I do, it'll be a .280 AI. I reload so that makes my decision easier. If I didn't, I would probably stick with my 6.5 or go to .270.

280 AI is going to produce recoil on par with a 3006. 270 or 6.5 PRC does not get you much over your Creedmore. Your answer is a 308 or a standard 280. Ammo availability probably gives the nod to the 308. 280 wins on cool factor points tho!

I can't remember ever seeing a box of ammo on a shelf that said AI or SAUM. Am I just missing it?

With commercial ammo the PRC gets me another 200 yards over the Creedmoor. Handloads for both gets me another 300. Some folks may find that a significant increase while others may find it trivial.

308 beats the Creedmoor on diameter; that additional 0.044” may matter to some women but is mostly trivial. Once past a couple of hundred yards the Creedmoor beats the 308 (excluding Super Performance).

A 30-06’s recoil is about 20 while the 280 AI is a bit over 16. Rifle fit, rifle weight and ammo specs can change it up a bit.

Now that I’m starting from scratch, I want to be on the low end of the recoil spectrum. While a 30-06 is less than a 7mm (which I’ve also shot a lot), it’s just slightly less suck. I’m looking for little to no suck.
If you want little to no suck, get a 6 creed with a well designed, heavy bullet and forget about energy. My 6.5 prc doesn’t have a lot of suck, but it has enough to make me sore after a range day.

270 win. If they came with faster twist barrels the creedmoor wouldn’t even be talked about, but they are still faster and flatter out to 99% of all shots people take.

284 Winchester?

Factory ammo virtually non-existent, but Lapua has started making brass for the F-class guys.

Will it start showing up in factory chamberings?

I'd like to see this round come back. Thinking of re-barreling my Tikka T3x and shooting Hammers or Barnes LRX at 3000 fps out of a non-magnum case. Similar ballistics to 280AI and 280 Rem, but you can get Lapua brass if that matters.

The original Forbes ULA 20 rifles were chambered in 284 Win...

I've seen more ammo and variety for 280AI than 280. And you can always fire 280 ammo in a 280AI if need be but not vice versa.

I would have no problem with the 6.5 prc, tikka is now starting to chamber there rifles in it also. I hope it’s here to stay for a very long time. I have not bought one yet, due to not being able to find the tikka I want available yet, but it’s on their web sight.

Actually, yeah, the 270 shoots faster enough than the 6.5 CM that it has less drop and wind deflection even with less BC bullets.

But, the 280 has that same greater potential but paired with better twist rates and higher BC 7mm bullets. The newer 270 magnums are promoting better .277” bullets but you’d still need to get a faster than typical 270 win twist.
