Always: knife compass fire starter minimum.
On two occasions the last 20 years I’ve been separated from my pack by a bear. I know, shouldn’t have set it down but things happen When you have to poop.
fell Chukar hunting in Hell’s canyon. Broke my leg. Some how lost my vest in the tumble, basically it got ripped off. Stuff in my pocket saved my butt.
Went deer hunting with two buddies on the wrestling team at Oregon State. Driving up a logging road we hit a fog bank, Joel drove right off the road and we rolled down into a clear cut. Ended up upside down, crawled out through the windshield . Packs were trapped under the rig as was most of our gear, it was cold and foggy, wouldn’t have died but it was sure nice to build a fire and wait for the trooper and a tow truck.
Knock on wood Ive always hung on to my guns.
Pack is well stocked of course, light weight redundancy is good.
