Where are you applying (state only unless you want to divulge)

I'm applying for home state Idaho rifle

Nevada muzzleloader

Colorado 2nd choice muzzleloader (in the event I don't draw Nevada)

Utah muzzleloader- very longs odds

Montana - not this year due to not having enough points to justify the new "squaring points" rule. Might be done for good, unless my hunting partner Trevor talks me into it.

Wyoming- point only as Western Wyoming hammered right now (although as Rob Wiley showed us, a true smoker could still come out of this country)

Arizona Muzzleloader- pretty long odds

New Mexico- can't decide as they dropped the NR quota to 6% so probably not. They can make thier money of the residents.

Oregon- quit two years ago with 4 points on the table due to their stingy NR policy and price increase. Like NM, they can get their money from the residents or the non-big-buck hunters (nothing wrong with those guys).

Probably best not to put in for MT. There aren't any deer here anyway. Tell your friends. :)

Seriously, you don't need points to draw a NR tag, and some of the best deer come out of non-permit units. Something to think about.

I'm going to put in for point only in CO, and might do OTC in ID. It is just over the hill afterall...

Hunts I've either already put in for and/or plan on putting in for:

AZ archery mule deer
CO archery mule deer (PP, alpine hunt-2nd choice)
NV archery mule deer
UT archery mule deer (limited entry)
WY mule deer (point only)
NM archery mule deer (2b-January)
CA Mule Deer (Goodale Unit)

I should for sure draw CO......we'll see about the others.

Bitterroot thanks for the tip and I'd have to agree that some of the best bucks come from nonpermit units. However, with plenty of hunting around here and with points built up in other states, I can't really justify hunting Montana unless I pulled a really good unit for big deer (I know, there's only a couple) so that is why I'll probably sit out for a bit.

For Idaho, I don't know if you saw my post in the Mule Deer forum, but I think there will be a few real smokers come out of OTC, a bunch of two points (due to mild winter) and not a lot in between. Just my two cents.

Co point is a good idea if you can get down there.

BOHNTR you a truly an archer! Best of luck.

Have you hunted any of the NM January hunts yet?

Just curious, as Idaho has a few that are OTC with some unhunted country in them. I gave up, though, as the crunchy snow and many does didn't justify the time I was spending compared to the velvet season.

Robby:

Yeah, I've hunted NM in January (archery) several times over the years. I've bowhunted 2B area and also unit 34......but you're right, the crunchy snow makes it to stalk in on bucks. I prefer the January AZ desert rut hunts.

Never tried Idaho for a late season archery hunt. Might have to do that someday.

I think I remember a mag story or website story with a pic of a January AZ deer you took. Good buck, big body if I remember???? If you get bored, post it up.

If a guy can hit a late archery hunt the day it snows, or, find a place he can sit without freezing to death, then it's a great hunt!

If you ever try Idaho, let me know, I can help.

Surprised to see not many people planning on hunting Idaho! I'll be applying for a limited entry unit and if I don't draw then it'll be OTC like usual! Thinkin about buying an extra tag this year, will have to see how things pan out... Good luck to all! And hey Robby, any tips?? 😉
