Where to hunt mountain lions?

I'm thinking about planning a mountain lion hunt. This will probably be my one and only mountain lion hunt, so I'd like to give myself the best opportunity to get a big Tom. Before I start to look for a guide, what states have big cats? I also wouldn't mind hunting in Canada. I read somewhere that cougars/mountain lions get bigger the further away you get from the equator. That could be complete horse shit, but if it where true, does anyone have any insight to British Columbia hunts. Thanks in advance.

If your not flexible time wise or budget wise then I would stick to locations that are consistent snow fall wise if your going to book a set date.. North Idaho, and BC have some of the biggest cats going. Lower down stateside areas in WY and Co get consistent snow fall. Just make sure your houndsmen has couple different areas to hunt based on conditions and quotas.

I too am looking for a cat to complete my big 8 and 9 in CO. The prices are insane. I can see myself killing 7 of the 8 here twice before 8.

6500 for “any cat” upwards of 10k for Tom’s only.


I’ve been on many cat hunts, sadly Indont put them much higher than a bear, or coyote.

Since AZ is "south" our mountain lions are not much bigger than a bobcat. So please go somewhere else.

Arizona has some huge cats, look there for sure. Utah has been known to produce some big cats too.
We have a good guy here near Laramie, Shaymus Wyman. He gets some big cats.
Finding an outfitter that may put you on call for the right snow conditions is good if possible.

I went to BC for my biggest cat. Was a very cold December hunt, -35 F. You can get the occasional large cat anywhere, but on average you have the best chance at a large one way up North.

I think that was colder than normal. It sure gave one pause before leaving the truck. Hard on equipment, dogs and people.

No one believes me when I tell them we have a lot of big cats in northern Arizona because conventional wisdom says it's too far south, but anything north of the Mongolian Rim is cat territory, and you can do it with temperature in double digit F even in the dead of winter.
