I was fortunate last week to pick a reissue 3rd season buck tag.
The tag typically take 2-3 PPs to get, so its a decent tag.
Hunting conditions will be mixed timber/sage and some open clearcuts.

Here is my question: Which Gun to take?

I have two similar guns I shoot with the same proficiency.

1st gun - Older Winchester Model 70 270 Win - 3x9 Burris scope
*46.5 gr IMR 4064 pushing a 130gr Hornady Interlock - 3000fps
200yd Zero / 400yds -18"

2nd gun - Older Winchester Model 70 30-06 - 3x9 Redfield scope
*46.5gr Varget pushing a 180gr Hornady Interlock - 2600fps
250yd Zero / 400yds -20"

Help me decide...

Congratulations on the reissue lottery win. I too would take both, good to have a backup. The 130 gr will be plenty for any muley buck.

Take them both. Use the one you feel best with and the other for backup

Obviously taking both would be optimal, but not feasible. My son will be taking the one I don’t because he has his own 3rd season buck tag in a different unit.

He also shoots either gun very well also so that’s a no factor.
He’s left the decision up to me - or Rokslide. :)

I would say whichever one of you is more likely to take a longer shot should take the .270 with them. I don't have those particular rifles but in my experiences the .270 shoots flatter than the 30-06.

All things being basically equal in weight, accuracy, reliability, and comfort behind the trigger, I would take the '06 with 180s for the increased bullet weight, size, and density.

No doubt the 270 with 130s will get the job done. It can be argued that on deer the 270 is more efficient with less meat damage.

Still, I would take the '06, if caliber/cartridge was the only substantial difference.

(Note: my answer would probably be different if choosing between 338 and 270)

I have a soft spot for 06s loaded with 180s but mine run about 2750. I would pick the 06 personally.

Sounds like you shoot them the same so I'd opt for the lighter weight of the two if your carrying it a ways if not go with the most knockdown power
