I own the three for that type of hunting. 6.8 Spc, 6.5 Grendel and a 5.56

Which one you grabbing to take coyote hunting??

Meh I don’t think I care about the pelt to much. I’m sure the 6.5 and 6.8 will destroy the dog no?

Neither 6.5 or your 6.8 will "destroy" the dog with a body shot. And as far as which is the preferable one to use it all depends on what is spitting it out, how is the gun set up what is the accuracy? Any of those cartages would kill a coyote proficiently.

My primary is a 6 creed, I also have a 223 and a 6.5 creed that comes along every once in a while. Bullet selection is more important than cartridge or caliber.

Bullet selection is key....but for me I'd grab the 5.56/.223. Never had an issues shooting dogs out to 400 and realistically I try to let the dogs get 100 yards or so before I shoot.

Others have said it well - bullet selection is key. If you use a rapid expansion bullet, just about any cartridge will make a mess. If you use a controlled expansion bullet, and avoid major bone hits, most holes will be very reasonable to patch. Since you don't care about pelts, shoot whatever you have. Out of your listed options, 223 makes the most sense economically.

I use either 6.8 spc with 120gr SST or .223 with 55 gr Vmax, both work well for coyotes under 200 yards. After having a Vmax "splash" on a close one (~25 yards) I'm switching to Speer .223 55gr bonded soft points, but I haven't shot one with those yet.

I've taken em with 22-250, .22 & .17HMR. The latter two were shot up close and personal. They aren't hard to kill, hole size matters on the nicer pelts.

If you don’t want to save the pelt the the venerable .224 TTH is a good all around choice for coyote up to deer size game
It’ll send 75-80 grainers 3500-3600 fps

I’ve used all three of those on coyotes. Just settled on 223 for simplicity. The Grendel was super quiet when suppressed. I’m a velocity whore so I’m always chasing that. Those light little 85-95gr Sierra hollow points are money in the 6.5 and 6.8. I always shoot 55gr vmax in my 223. Zero at 200 and you have virtually no holdovers to 300 which is a really rare long shot in my area.

Shot placement is key obviously. All mine have been DRT with a 223 with either a vmax or a nosler ballistic tip. A couple ran about 10-15 yards with a basic lead nose. A friend of mine on the other hand has shot quite a few in the guts with vmax’s and they all ran off. Dead, yes. Recovered, no

I’m running a 16” 6.8spc suppressed with a 90g tnt and it’s a hammer on dogs but if your saving pelts might want to go with a different bullet.

.223/5.56 has worked well for me within 200 yards. Just find the right bullet, federal blue box 55 gr hollow points is what I use.

I’ve also seen a Hornady 143 gr eldx out of a 6.5 creedmore do some massive pelt damage. The coyote was also at 50 yards so take that for what it’s worth.

6.5 Grendel. I’ve seen way too many coyotes run off from 223 with vmaxs. Yes I’ve also seen a lot drop. But still, seems like your margin for error is slim with 223
