I picked up a 6.5 creedmoor 24” barrel and it just fits me. I shoot my kimbers great, but not the same “fits like a glove” experience. I am looking to pick up another, I want a 400-500yard elk gun and only use lead free bullets. Pretty much only .270 and 30-06 options. Maybe.308. Looking for a round that doesn’t need to be a broadside shot. Thank you

How well and how far have you been shooting with your 6.5? And how much deviation from "broadside" are you talking? It's still has to run through the vitals and 500 is a decent poke.

I was not aware a .280 was coming out. I have worked up to 350 yards with 6.5 so far but finally have a place I can get past 1000 yards if I wanted for practice so will be ramping that up. Quartering away would be the non-broadside shot I would want to take.

Thank you

I'm still holding out for the hinted at 280. Also hope they come out with more in the cerekote with the jungle green stock. I know it's cosmetic, but I like that look.

I love my 6.5/30-06 combo. I bought my 30-06 Fieldcraft to hunt all Western game inside 500. I'm very happy with it.

I am leaning that way, there are also plenty of non-lead factory ammo options as well.

You’d be surprised at how well a 6.5 will penetrate with 140’s at that distance.

If I was using lead bullet I agree.

I’m pretty sure the same laws of physics apply to monometal bullets as they do lead core.

140 gr 6.5mm, 140 gr 7mm, 140 gr .277, 150 gr .308 mono launched within a few hundred FPS of each other are statistically insignificant with regard to penetration at 600

Not sure why the 6.5 CM isn't in contention. Monos typically outpenetrate lead core bullets, all else equal.

How is the recoil with the 30-06 fieldcraft? I have read some reviews that it is extensive.

I will let my father in law use it, so I don’t want to get same caliber. Also concerned with quartering away shots and penetrating both lungs.

30-06. You'll get some recoil help shooting 165's instead of 180's. Either weight in a monometal will do the job on elk from all but the most extreme angles. Just accept that you are going to have more recoil, though.

I suspect you will rarely shoot past 150-200 yards and not have time to wait for a better angle. All of my off angle shots on elk have been short range in timber where picking my angle wasn't easy to do.

Maybe I will give the 6.5 CM with 127 LRX a shot, I can pick up a kimber Hunter for father in law in 6.5, he prefers a detached magazine anyway.

Plenty of time to figure it out.

I'd stick with your 6.5 and spend 1/2 the amount of money a new Fieldcraft would cost you on ammo and practice, and you'll end up being many times as capable a hunter as someone with a bunch of rifles who hasn't gotten intimately familiar with any of them.

Thank you, was much simpler when I just had my trusty browning .308:)

The Fieldcraft fits me very well. So felt recoil isn't as significant as some heavier 30-06s and 7 RMs I've owned in the past. I'm shooting 178 gr ELD-X 2770 fps. But compared to my 10# .260, yes it is significant. It's made me focus on my shooting form much more than I have in the past. I consider 500 yards my limit with the gun which works well with my 3-10 scope and 30-06 performance.

But felt recoil is very individual specific, so my post may not be very helpful. The 30-06 Fieldcraft will recoil no more than another rifle of the same weight and caliber, it just may hit you harder based on fit.
