A bit far afield for me, but if InciWeb, MT Air Quality, and the local paper aren't doing it I'd try ringing up the nearest USFS/BLM office. It'd be the Helena or Lewis & Clark NF.

This pulls all reported incidents from interagency fire dispatch centers. As in, there’s no info you can get as a public by calling an office you won’t be able to find here. When an engine crew gets dispatched to check a fire or smoke, it shows up in here the moment the report is filed in the network. Any time a fire is updated, it shows up here.

Call one of the 7 bars in town and buy a few drinks in exchange for local info. Wouldn't suggest the truck stop, but my experience is dated.

They were vocal. Came close a number of times but the wind was never consistent enough to seal the deal. 32 yds was as close as we got.
