I will always range if I have time and don't have anything nearby pre-ranged. That being said I have no issue estimating and taking shots inside 40-45 yards.

When my eyes belonged to a younger person , I had zero problems judging yardage on the fly , now that I have eyes that are not as good , judging accurately has become a real problem , inside 40 I do not need a range finder , altho if I have time to use one , I will , beyond 40 I absolutely need a range finder

To help offset my declining yardage judging ability , I have set my top pin at 30 , shooting at a single spot target from point blank to 34 yards my arrow will stay within the 4 ring , my 2nd pin will take me to 45 and that is as far as I think I can ethically shoot anymore with birthday # 70 looming large
