Sydney Lamb, Wildlife Biologist in north-west Utah, joins us on this episode to talk about mule deer. Robby Denning joins us as well with some questions for Sydney. We cover fawns, predators, increasing habitat, collaring bucks and how to make better deer hunting.

What would you like to hear from F&G?

Listened to the episode on today's drive.
You and Robby did great and where do I donate to support Robbys pledge?
Questions I would like to hear
-how do you get a collar on the deer?
-why does disturbing deer hurt them?
-what do biologist in different units see as the 1 or 2 biggest causes to deer struggles
-what do biologist wish they had more time for

All of your questions lead to great discussion and definitely ask the magic wand one again.
Thanks for great podcast.

Legit! I’ll write them down. We’ll have Sydney and/or someone similar on to do another episode at some point.

I'll hit that one. Because during most winters, they are surviving primarily on fat stores--it's difficult to impossible to restore lost fat until green up on most winter ranges. So a bunch of guys running deer from ridge to ridge only lessens the deers' chances for survival, especially light fawns and older deer. Walt Prothero documented it in his Mule Deer Quest (or Stalking Trophy Mule Deer) book 20+ years ago, and I've yet to hear a biologist dispute him.

I'm sure the collaring efforts cost a few deer lives too.

Thanks for listening to the podcast.

I would love to hear from a biologist that focuses on bear populations in the lower 48. The ungulate biologists get all the love, but more insight on seasonal bear behavior, reaction to pressure etc... would be really interesting.

Sydney was GREAT. Makes me happy to see my $$ going to pay for good research.

A few questions for F&G in any state.

1. Tech. How big of a factor is the rapid advancement in tech on deer#?(LR, thermal, etc).

2. Point restrictions, do they work (3 point or better, 2 point only, etc)

3. I really liked the “queen” question. “If you were queen/ king, what’s the ONE thing you would do to improve management”.

Good job you two.

Thanks man

on 1. "Tech" above, she questioned that several times in the podcast. I believe we're at the point that we don't have the data to say for sure, so it's still just a guess. The haters say it does, the lovers say it doesn't.

I'd love a writer to step up and do a article on if the success rates have changed over 30 years, i.e. the subject of tech vs. success rates on deer and see if there is anything significant in the data to show that it's impacted success rates, or it's just assumed. I'd publish that article!
