[Winters Kamp]

I wasn’t expecting the altitude to be such a game changer! Being from indiana, my adapted altitude of 800ft was laughable at 10,000ft. The 5 mile hike to Big Sandy Lake was rough! My 12 year old daughter really impressed me! She showed me what she was capable of and at the same time let me know when she needed a break. Some snow packs were over a foot deep, but there wasn’t very many. It took us 2 1/2 hours to hike in, but after day 5 we finally were getting used to the thin air and the hike out was way easier.
Fishing wasn’t good. Ice was still covering 75% of the lake. No wildlife, except for marmots, they were kind of a problem. Always sneaking around trying to take something from camp. Weather was perfect. 65/70°F during the day and dipping into the low to mid 30s at night. The winds put us to sleep at night and added extra comfort. If a bear did sneak up on camp at night, I couldn’t hear it because of the wind.

I’d definitely do this again. Maybe a different time of year when the chances of seeing wildlife and catching fish are better, though.

That’s so great! Lifelong memories were made on that trip for sure. My daughter is six months old, and seeing this makes me so excited for our future adventures.
