So a couple questions to see what your guys opinions are. I'm new to wolf hunting and doing my first elk hunt as well. So my questions are 1 - while I'm scouting for the elk, is it going to hurt anything while I sit and glass to do a couple calls for a wolves or will they kinda ruin finding any bulls for my hunt on October if there is any in the area? And 2nd question is, how do you guys feel about an electronic call back a ways in the mountains? Or should I stick to just using my own mouth for a howl or 2 and maybe a cow call or distress cow call type of thing?

You have as good a luck finding wolves with elk calling as wolf calling. The same thing will not apply in reverse. Elk rarely say, "there's that alpha predator pack killer, I should go see how I rate on his dinner list".

well ya I figured the elk aren't gonna come running to a wolf call haha was just wondering if that's going to make the elk run the other way before I have a chance to spot them if they're there while glassing for the both.

I haven't done this but if you do.. I'd be glassing escape routes and then go home early.

I doubt it would impact what is in the area in October but it could hurt your chances of taking inventory of what is there now.

That's what I was hoping someone wouldn't say. I was hoping I could maybe get lucky and kill 2 birds with one stone. And about the escape routes, are you talking escape routes for me cuz of the wolves or what? And how come go home early?

Escape routes that elk would take. Meaning the elk aren't gonna want to hang around in the basin they just heard you either howling or pretending to be something getting killed. And go home early because the elk aren't gonna be in your spot that day if they just heard all that.

If you're glassing far enough away then you can probably do what you're suggesting without spooking the elk but that also means you might not notice if somehow your plan works and wolves actually do show up.

Ok just making sure I was on the same page as what you were saying. It sounds like I'm probably gonna have to quit being greedy and choose one or the other then when I'm out there.

The Elk herd about 200 yards away didn't care that this wolf pulled a calf from the herd and killed it. They never howled though.

That's crazy! I'm torn I don't know maybe I'll still give it a shot especially if I don't find any elk where I'm at and I'll just stay quiet with the howl and just play with some elk calls. I don't know

Do not make wolf sounds while elk hunting, you will just make the elk leave the area. You might have wolves come in while you are bulging or making cow calls. If wolves start howling in your drainage, your elk hunt just became a wolf hunt.
