I usually hunt WY 23 or 24 on a type 2 tag. Out of curiosity I checked the leftover list And there are none. I can’t believe that many folks have secured access to private land??? Do they just buy a tag and hope for the best??? Seems like a really poorly thought out plan.

Having run into people hunting 23 last season, many seemed to purchase left over thinking that once they got there they would be more public than they thought or would be able to find access somehow. I also think the size of 23 makes people jump in as well.

Sadly, some do not even look at the restrictions the licenses may have before they apply.
Leftovers are always leftover for a reason, very little access to public lands usually.

They don't have access. Its a problem that I'm not sure how to address. Antelope tags in NE WY are a disaster with 60-90% going to nr's. Local hunters aren't happy because of the ridiculous pressure put on the little available public. Most landowners are pretty sick of it also after the 15th brand new out of state pickup pulls up and asks for permission to shoot a doe antelope. Ranchers got better things to do than deal with that. It's 2 weeks of utter caos and 50 weeks of quite WY.

I’ve seen a dramatic increase in pressure in the last 4-5 years. They’re going to eventually have to cut the number of NR tags. The low/ no point units have become a zoo.

Probably most of them do not look at the restriction of the tag or think knocking on doors is a reliable way to hunt. OR maybe a bunch are going with outfitters now?

Any way you shake it the publicity of "easy first western hunt" or "easy to get tags" has absolutely caused that well to dry up.

They can issue tags but if all the lope are on private and there's little public land in the unit those who bought the tag are making nothing more than a donation to Wyoming Game and Fish and taking their rifle out for a drive. Only 14% of the Unit is public and a lot of that is surrounded by private.

Wyoming Game and Fish even states:
Much of the public land illustrated on maps is not accessible. The large tract of public land in the western portion of the hunt area is not suitable habitat. Although antelope occur here, they do so at low densities. The limited public land receives heavy hunting pressure resulting in high hunter densities. Gaining access to private lands is difficult, with many ranches leased to outfitters. Even for those willing to pay a trespass fee it is often difficult to find ranches that are taking new hunters. Hunting during the first week of the season is very congested so hunters coming later in the season will see less hunting pressure.

Just how many Type 1 / Type 2 (that allow public access) buck tags took 0PP to draw this year? Feel like it was pretty slim pickings. I'm interested and its going to be a slow day. Off to WFGD website I go.

Ok, so here's all the 2021 Type 1 / Type 2 NR buck tags for 0PP holders (regular draw):

Unit Drawn/Applied % Drawn - % Public
002-1 52/134 38.06% - 28%
003-1 62/122 50% - 20%
008-1 7/313 2.24% - 19%
010-1 62/62 100% - 2%
015-1 182/230 79.13% - 4%
016-1 18/336 5.36% - 20%
017-1 129/510 25.1% - 25%
019-1 109/112 97.32% - 20%
020-1 136/299 44.48% - 10%
022-1 207/694 29.83% - 10%
024-1 22/186 11.83% - 25%
026-1 244/823 29.65% - 16%
038-2 12/12 100% - 11%
102-1 18/181 9.94% - 20%
109-1 84/126 65.87% - 3%
111-1 2/42 4.76% - 5%

Absolutely zero units offered a greater than 50% drawing odds with 0PP and greater than 20% public land.

The NR tags are already limited- the residents just don't want them so they end up going to non-residents. From a management standpoint, they just need to split the permits by public vs private to spread the pressure out. That will increase success rates and improve the experience for all. Of course fewer tags will be sold and the public ones would then require PP to draw.
