All I can go by in the Panhandle is twig snaps. They’re keeping their mouths shut. Usually have elk songs to go to bed to and get up to every day around this time.
Exodus were by ID definition, "barbed" and illegal. I love the Exodus, but switched to the Magnus SerRazors when I moved to ID. Nice to see their handiwork. Good shot.
I was told that the late hot season and lack of rain may have pushed the rut back a bit. It didn't seem to me that the elk were pairing up quite yet. Yesterday (last day of archery here) I heard my fist sparring match but not where I could get to. Bulls weren't responding to cow calls like I...
Wed and Thurs in the ID panhandle was cold and wet. Even the chipmunks stayed in bed. Heard one cow call that I think was a hunter at last light Thursday. Today was much warmer and sunny... and I had to be at home.

Thanks. Being a noob to elk hunting, I'll take all the advise and encouragement I can get. It was a 120 yard tall by 50-60 yard wide "rock glacier" that nobody wanted to step out into, and he had the shadows, I had the sun side so I would have been busted right away. I'll be...
After a few trips in, I do have to say that the two-legged predators are 1/10th of what I was used to in FarNorCal. Wasn't able to call in multiple bulls every day, but it wasn't hard to find one that would have a chat with me and I only bought my first reed a few weeks ago.
ID panhandle, they are very vocal from 6:30-8:00 am on warm days and 7-10:30 on cooler days. Now a week of rain coming that could shift it again. Had a 20-30 minute conversation with a bull yesterday, but he didn't feel the need to break cover to investigate. Guess he didn't feel like a fight.
Get on the trail in/out and sit for hours waiting for them to come through. That slag is all that all I have to work with this year. Hope for good wind direction.
Spent a decent bit of time in unit 4 last week. Only heard one cow call on Thurs about 4:15 am. Also a cow moose crashing through about 60 yards from camp. A few white tails were seen out of bow range and my demolished bear bait station. I'm disabled and can't wander too far from the roads...
Smoke started clearing out yesterday. Saw my first yellow sunrise in two weeks + and was such a nice change. Smoke was so bad I had a hard time doing more than a couple/few hundred feet elevation in a single hunt, but then again I'm a disabled (and therefore out of shape), 40 year old smoker...
Very happy with the Spy Happy Lenses. Not very dark, but with a brimmed hat they keep the glare off, don't disrupt much color and polarized takes the glare off.
I use the hooked carpet utility knife blades (better if a little used). Then I use Scotch-Brite and isopropyl alcohol to finish removing any glue residue. Nocks removed prior to procedure.
Consistent spine matters way more that straightness. Weight matters more that straightness. Use your arrow squaring device to square inserts. Mark insert faces with sharpie markers and sand them until all sharpie marker is removed. See how your groups turn out. I will second the statement...
Hunt your hunny hole for deer or elk. You can not use any portion of "game" as bait. Do NOT put parts in your bait station, but if you take an elk / deer near your bear bait station, I see no reason that you can't leave it where you take it, and if it adds an attractant near your bait station...
