    Corned venison

One thing to keep in mind. Single muscle roasts (football etc.) won’t turn out as well as a cut with connective tissue. My favorite to corn are shoulders, necks and shanks. Leaving all the silver skin on to maximize the moisture/collagen content. I make a “teabag” for the pickling spice out of...

So you got your ram, now it is time to eat...

Sheep Korean lettuce wraps for dinner tonight. Cucumber, carrot, avocado, and brown rice to go inside the lettuce leaves with the meat. Meat was marinated in sriracha, ginger, garlic, brown sugar and fish sauce, grilled super hot and sliced. Took the marinade and put in the food processor with...

Sheep hunt gear: what to leave?

Don't overthink this, to be at that total weight for this amount of time you are doing well. 10 days of food is minimum 15 and more likely closer to 18 or 20 pounds. Add a bag of water and you have an easy 25 pounds weight that can be pared way down once an animal is taken. I am doing my second...

    To solo or not?

I have nothing constructive to add but I’m in the same boat. I drew ds165 and don’t have any partners with free time/money. I’m torn on the whole 10 days alone thing. I know I won’t hunt as hard in some ways without the safety net, But I can also let things develop with less pressure not having...

    Unique vacation ideas in Alaska?

True north RV in Fairbanks will rent you a new model F series with a nice cab over and they are the only outfit I found that will let you drive off pavement. in 2015 we took the boys and did the loop from Fairbanks down to Denali park, across the Denali highway and back up. we all loved it...

    The quest for hunting boots...

for a low volume foot and narrow heels, consider the Zamberlan 980 gtx. Non insulated, 11" tall, and they worked for me after lowas and scarpas and kennetreks didn't. 3 seasons and quite a few miles later, they're beat up but still going strong. And still water proof in SE AK...

    Chamber sealers?

I've got almost 1500 bags through my Vacmaster 215 in 4 seasons . I wouldn't get anything less. the cost savings up front versus the performance losses aren't worth it IMO. 10 cents per 8X12, 4 mil bags is hard to beat.

Looking for advise 280 AI or 308 Light Weight Rifle

I own a kimber Montana in 280 AI because all the cool kids had one. Buy the 308and don't look back. Reloading is entertaining but also a PITA and extra cost. I love my rifle but would get a standard chambering next time for ease of buying ammo/brass. Everything I've shot with my 280 has been...

So glad this came back up today. I have been having a bunch of problems and pain due to my hips being crazy tight. Did a few rounds of this exercise before lifting today and it helped!

    Synthetic quilts

If you lose a lot of moisture and the quilt is getting wet that way, one could use a vapor barrier inside. If drips, use a small piece of tyvec or sil nylon make a small nest section over you. I always pack a 6x9 sil nylon tarp anyway and when it's really wet out (which is 90% of the time in SE...

Acute Lower Back Pain and Backpacks

I've had similar pain and ended up going with a pack that loaded more of my back and not just into my lumbar if that makes sense. For me it was a vertebrae (can't remember exactly, L5 maybe) that was shifting forward and pinching nerves.
