I'm hunting unit 74 in CO during the 2nd rifle season (Oct 21-29). 74 is pretty rugged and has elevations from 6k-13k. I've been doing a lot of electronic scouting and will only get to be in the area for a few hours to scout because I'm from OK. I have archery elk hunting experience in CO but this will be my first muley hunt and it's been a while since I've picked up a rifle. I've talked to a few people with the DOW in the area and have gotten mixed messages on what elevation to focus on. I'll be backpacking in solo to try to get away from the crowd. Any muley or unit advice would be greatly appreciated.

All depends on the weather leading up to the season. We hunt a unit over and if it's been warm the deer and elk will still be high. I hunted 3rd elk in 74 a few years back and since it had been warm we didn't see elk below 10,000'. Of course there are resident deer at all elevations, but the migration down won't have started if there hasn't been some cold weather.

Deer are at ALL elevations in this unit. So picking one to focus on on would not be fare to you. 2nd season likely wont have the migration lower starting. So pick where you want to hunt them and go for it.

Thank you both for the replies. I have a couple areas of interest at different elevations. This will be a learning experience for me.

The big deer will stay high until the snow or the rut pushes them out. The will be in the thick trees and very hard to find. I would stick to the southern end of the unit. Check out around the ski resort purgatory

akak510- did you get advise on the unit. I’m also from OK and looking to draw a Sept muzzleloader tag this year. I don’t know much about the unit, so looking for any guidance from someone who’s had boots on the ground.

Anyone looking to see how a one time post affects a unit should look at these perfect examples.

chasewild- I don’t find your comments or links appropriate. I’m a new member and have to make comments to be active in the group. In all honesty, I seen a fellow Oklahoman drew the tag and had been there, so Figured I would try to make a friend and learn something about a unit.
Hell, that’s one of the best parts about hunting is the comradery and talking about our experiences. I’ve hunted the west and know what it takes to be successful and will do so again in 2019 with or without anyone’s assistance. You don’t need to comment back, but you should really consider how you address folks. Your comments added

The interesting part about this thread is that it's precisely the reason for the two threads I posted. And from my perspective -- someone who has watched unit 74 blow up -- my post was not only merited, but required.

Guys from the Midwest or Back East don't get why sharing specific information on a unit is harmful. Use PMs. Colorado and other parts of the West are being inundated and being careful with information is definitely prudent.
