I'd consider how wet you're gonna get - synthetic maintains warmth and dries a bit faster over down.
If the wt/warmth/packability isn't an issue, synth.
The 6oz nalgene = adding hot water will not warp the container, resistant to stains/flavors from other liquids.
The 4oz nalgene = container will warp due to hot water, and I would assume leech toxins from the plastic, flavors from other liquids are more apt to remain.
With the 6oz nalgenes...
Yea, that MLD BB2 looks fab for the shelters he makes. One issue I have with the bivy approach is the movement of the material as it lays on top of you. It would appear MLD is providing a semi free standing option.
I do not have flat feet, however, I have experienced heel slippage due to a wide forefoot and slimmer heel. Through guess and test, I've switched out numerous insoles in an effort to reduce the discomfort and found success with thicker wool insoles that are void of arch support. You also may...
Crocs + Contractor garbage bags.
Don't wanna take boots off, use bags for crossings, they'll hold up for a few creeks or so.
Crocs shine due to the weight, comfort, simplicity.
I'd take a gander at the stove systems from https://www.traildesigns.com/
JB's perceived limitations:
- fuel source (iso-butane), non-refillable, unknown fuel level, impacted by temp/wind
- bulk
- weight
Edit: The coolest application I've seen of the JB line of stoves is when climbers are...
Just wanted to share this an approach I've recently taken in regards to water filtration... kinda like sawyer squeeze.
SOFTBOTTLE™ .5L | 1.0L x2 = 2.4oz (remove base caps, replace with push-pull cap)

- Ciabatta buns, toasted, brushed with butter (both sides), remove from oven add mayonnaise
- Moose burgers (8-10oz) with ample melted sharp cheddar cheese
Timing: When the buns are toasted/buttered/mayo'd, the burgers should be nearly finished - add the fresh (moist) burgers to...
WSM = violent, 6.5 = pin prick
Wouldn't regret your choices here, the sectional density alone shines above the WSM on these smaller bodied cliffhangers.
On bison or moose, WSM all day!
PS: If you want the fast route and don't mind dropping a little coin, check out Hill People Gear's Decker Pack Frame and add the OR Dry Sack, same concept with a quality manufacturer.
HPG harness system distributes weight well, especially for individuals who cannot endure heavy loads grinding...
Avoid the high end packs, there's quite a bit of marketing for the price point - - - I would honestly visit mil surplus or pawn shops etc. to find the following:
- FILBE USMC Pack Frame
- FILBE Shoulder Straps
- FILBE Waist Belt
Once acquired, find an Outdoor Research Durable Dry Sack 55L to...
Bring less food with you during pre-season hikes.
I advocate for hunting hungry.
/agree muddydogs - it's all about experience and overcoming the hardships.
I have both inner nets (can you say a nest for each person?!) as well as a bivy. I feel you're best to asses your environment and situational factors, however, the bivy allows you to keep a light weight waterproof/bugproof cocoon in your backpack.
If you too far from the base camp (think...
HPG needs to sell their harness without their kit bag.
+vote OV, debated between both, looks like a few more storage compartments with the OV over Marsupial.
Tough decision man.
Find a mug that a nalgene will nest into. Of course, you would have to be using a nalgene to begin with.
I place the mug in a waist belt pouch and a nalgene slides in perfectly.
To be honest... use a vapor barrier inside of the bag. You're either getting condensation drips from the tent or you're sweating through the bag.
Two dudes in a small tent will create a ton of condensation, especially in freezing temperatures... may want to find a way to vent the tent.
