I've read that before as well. If it worked for her, why don't you "give it a shot" - with the .223 - in the ear hole. Let us all know how that works out for you.
Ear hole? Very small target. Surrounded by dense bone. Bears have fairly normal kill zone/vitals, especially broadside, which is a much bigger target than an “ear hole”.
Probably also a similar reason why aiming for the vitals is preferred over head shots for most other animals.
I often wonder if I like September or November better. I am only able to get an answer out of myself twice a year. In September I like September better. In November I like November better. Every other month it’s a battle to decide. Hmmm. Maybe a fourth option should be added.
Similar to the poster above, I found that a good pair of binoculars on a tripod outperformed a small spotting scope. Maybe not in magnification (or weight) but in image, clarity, and ability to glass for long periods of time.
Have never gone hunting just for bears there. Have killed several in the early season over water holes when it was very hot, a few over elk carcasses middle of season after packing elk meat out, and also near berry patches randomly. Also called in and shot a bear using an elk call, mimicking...

Well, about the only thing I can say is the Zeiss were the only ones that had the issue - for me. (Everybody's eyes are different.)
But, to answer your question - I have not had any issues with binoculars I've owned (Vortex, Swarovski, NIkon, Kahles) - and I have not had any issues with...
Actually, your 30 yard pin will likely be dead on at about 6-8 yards, 2” high at 20 yards, dead on again at 30 yards, and about 2-3” low at 35 yards. Try it! (Will vary depending on arrow weight and speed, obviously)
If you can deal with the clutter, three pin. If you can’t, one pin.
I use one pin slider to keep sight picture cleaner. Set it at 34 yards and it’s good enough in elk from point blank to about 37 yards. Beyond 40 yards I am ranging everything.
KISS. Just have to be able to judge one...
If I want to know how far I’ve hiked I just leave the GPS on for the entire duration. Eliminates any guesswork and feeling like a chump when you say “I backpacked an elk out 8.12 miles each way” - because then at least you know the distance is correct, even if you still sound like a chump.
8x42. It was most unfortunate as I really liked the glass and wanted to make they work for me. It wasn’t to be. I have used several binoculars over the years from a variety of manufacturers and never experienced the kidneybean issue before or since. When I held them juuuuusst right the...
Yes. Zeiss conquest. Without eyeglasses. Zeiss sent replacement eyecups which were longer at no charge. Issue still existed. Returned binoculars to the store.
