New Mexico Archery Elk: Unit 6B - Beauty & Passion

I think your biggest problem will be drought. The Jemez is a tinder box right now. However, several seeps and stream to keep the elk there. I shot mine the September after the last huge fire. Had zero problems finding elk. They did make me sign a waiver due to all the widow makers in the area I...

    Gila Wilderness Archery

To respond to your original question, I'm headed in on Labor Day weekend and staying the duration. No specific reason, other than it fits into my work schedule better. Sounds like you have your plan worked out. Good luck and maybe our paths will cross...Ha!

    New Mexico Unit 16C!

That would be a tough question to answer. Moisture does tend to change things. A bull can make a new wallow anywhere it is wet. However, elk tend to rut in the same places from year to year unless something happens to move them out. The last several year have been rough with all the fires...

    Chili powder???

In the Southwest, several people actually rub red chili powder directly on the meat as it's being skinned. Keeps the bugs away and predators. We like it hot:)

    floor vs. floorless?

Thanks again gents! I should probably mention that sandy dirt( as nick stated ), scorpions and snakes would also rank high on the list of concerns! I will more than likely take the plunge on a floorless and just deal with whatever happens to crawl in:)

    floor vs. floorless?

Wow! Thanks for the quick replies. I agree with floorless being lighter. However, do they really keep the elements from coming in? I NM, we often have monsoons during archery hunts. Tons of rain during a short period of time makes me paranoid about going floorless.

    floor vs. floorless?

I'm looking for pros and cons concerning floor and floorless shelters. I'm on the fence about floorless. The line from Kifaru looks great. I am wanting to cut some weight off what I currently use, which is in the 3 pound range. Thanks for any insight!
