I've had great experiences with Patagonia's Capilene line and Marmot. The Marmot bottoms I have are older and shaped a bit like corduroy pants (with the valleys & ridges). I see on their website they have smooth faced bottoms, I cannot speak for those.

I can tell you from experience doing trail work in backcountry SE Alaska, that is not true. Synthetic trumps wool if you're in wet environment. I'm also of the opinion that (as far as baselayers go) synthetics are better in the warmth:weight ratio.
