I saw a Wolverine in the late '70s in one of Montana's Unlimited Bighorn sheep hunting units. A friend and I were having a lunch break on top of a ridge, and watching 3 Mule deer bucks on a knob below us. All 3 bucks were watching something below them. We then saw a Wolverine stalking up the...
I have mine set at 101. It's hot (for me) getting in, but comfortable (and safe!) to stay in an hour or so.
104 and above can cause heat stroke and other health issues.
"For my antelope hunt I'll be using a 5.5# tripod and either a 15# or 19# rifle since weight isn't a concern."
WOW!!! I've never carried that much extra weight on any hunt.
When I hunted Dagestan Tur in Azerbaijan, my guide wouldn't let me bring my 1 3/4 lb tripod for my spotting scope...
I have both a RCBS inertia puller and a RCBS collet die with .22, .25, 7 mm, .30, and .375 collets. I use them both. I put a foam ear plug or a wad of cloth in the bottom of the inertia puller to prevent lead bullet noses from distorting.
I remember shooting one antelope buck 5 section fences from where I parked by car. I field dressed him where I shot him, then strapped him on my pack frame and walked the 5 section fences back to my car. About 1/4 mile from my car there was another buck about the same size as the one on my...
I started case forming in 1978 when I had my .30-06 re-chambered to .30 Gibbs and at the same time built a .257 Ackley.
For the Gibbs I had to expand the .30-06 case necks up to .35 Caliber, then full lenght size them in the Gibbs FL size die, creating a false shoulder to get the correct...
I've only killed one elk with my 7 mm RM, a cow that was bang flop dead with a 150 gr Accubond.
But I have used that rifle with 160 gr Accubonds on 3 caribou, a musk ox, and a half dozen African critters.
I hunted moose in Newfoundland with that combination, but didn't see a bull with big...
I'm on my 2nd or 3rd can of Imperial wax (in over 40 yrs of using it), and always wipe it off after loading.
I don't use my tumbler to remove the wax because I don't want the wax in the media when I clean the cases after fireing them.
Like @cowboy, I've hunted antelope for over 50 years and in 3 states. I've probably shot most of them from prone, many from sitting, and a few, like my last one, standing.
Leather gloves and knee pads are real helpful crawling through cactus, and be aware where you sit or lie down.
For many...
Definitely remove all of the brain matter and other flesh from the skull.
I would protect the horn tips with cardboard and try to find a box large enough to put the head in, and pad it with your dirty clothes or jackets.
For over 45 years I've drawn antelope tags here in Montana plus a couple of tags in Colorado and Wyoming. Most of those years I shot one or two antelope. A couple of my rifles had 3-9x40 scopes, and my main antelope rifle had a Leupold straight 6x scope. I don't think that I ever took a shot...
I de-prime all of my rifle cases with a universal de-capping die before I wash and/or tumble the cases, then...
The de-capping pin of your size die will push that grain of walnut shell out of the flash hole just like it does the used primers.
I've seen goats that are still shedding their previous winter's hair in August. They look like someone who just got a Mohawk haircut.
Because large goat horns start at 9", I think that a big part of their trophy quality is their long winter hair.
The Montana mountain goat season runs from...
Many years ago Joe Jonas Taxidermy in Denver had a deal where they would tan, with hair on, any elk hide for $35. I had my first 6x6 bull hide and a rag horn and a cow elk hides tanned. That bull hide has covered one wall in my reloading room for close to 50 years, my Sister still has one of...
I have both a Thumbler's tumbler and a Frankford Arsenal vibratory tumblers.
For a while I used the SS pins in the Thumbler's, but ofter the pins would stick in .223, .22-250, and my .257 Ackley brass and would be difficult to get out.
Now I only use the FA vibratory tumbler. I first soak...
and...
Isn't this about what I said in my first reply post?
So all "unnecessary fluff" aside...
I just went back and re-read this entire thread, some posts several times, and
I have no idea how to "squish the bullet in the brass" and what do you measure?
I'm old school, does squishing the...
