I finally got around the last few weeks to testing the 170gr Berger EOL bullets in my 270wsm. I followed Berger’s recommendation for load development for a hunter (I slightly modified it and tested way more) but here is the short version loading .01, .04, .08 and .12 off the lands. My sweet spot is between .08 and .1 jump, crazy!!!

Average velocity is 3,040ft/s, SD = 4, ES = 9.

I’m pretty happy with the final results. If anyone is interested in the process I followed here it is, I did modify mine a hair but overall same process.

What is your barrel length? Long or short action?

Yeah I’m super happy with it! Going to stop playing with that load and next will test the 175gr matrix and 180gr woodleigh.

I have the tendency to not leave well enough alone but man that looks fine and I doubt those other bullets out perform the 170.

My problem is half the fun is developing the loads and shrinking them. Also already have them so might as well do some testing.

Problem is long heavy bullets in a magnum is going to burn your barrel quickly. Very possibly less than 800 accurate shots. That’s fine as long as you acknowledge that barrels are consumables. Go ahead and order a new barrel now and have it on hand. Since you don’t have any experience to know when to expect a drop in accuracy I’d be very careful as you approach hunting season not to run your round count past 600 or so to be sure the rifle is in top form for hunting. It’s not just that your accuracy might drop a little but it could also start tearing bullets apart and they fail to reach the target. Build a target rifle to play with.

Yeah that is true, I’ll still play some as I didn’t have it built just to be shot a few times a year 😀. If the barrel burns up then I’ll have to really think if I want another 270wsm or to try something else. Maybe a 300wsm next.

Current shot count is just over 200rds, maybe sitting at 250 max.

Now my 223 has had 250 put through it in the last two weeks.

The nice thing about shooting ragged holes in a barrel burner is that they all go right where you want them to.

Save the development and go kill chit.

Yeah I stopped messing with it and moved on to a 22 for fun.
