A different take on cold-weather car camping

To start this off I am a college student (MS in wildlife and fisheries sciences, if anyone is curious) with little funds for large gear purchases on a whim, so I have to plan out my purchases pretty carefully.

In being frugal I found a double use for my ice fishing pop-up shack. I have a large six-sided thermal ice fishing shack from Cabelas and one sunflower-style heater for it. Total cost of these items was under $400. The shelters are designed to be warm and big internally, about 65 square feet of floor space, and about six feet tall in the middle. Sets up in about a minute, holds 4 to 5 people very easily with some gear on ends, and with the heater set on low can sustain around 60 degree temps inside with single digits outside. It is also designed with vents and windows, so condensation is not much of an issue.

May not be for everyone, but can provide another option to people looking for a cheaper option to car camp in extremely cold temperatures.

Be careful with the sunflower style of heater. Carbon monoxide can build up inside the ice shelter in the case of not enough venting. I have first hand experience with this and don’t want others to share in it with me!
