For those that have run standalone gps units, do you find a noticeable difference in performance and battery life in extreme cold temperatures? If so, do you have any recommendations on units that perform well in extreme weather?

The winter season where I live routinely gets down to -30. I find that my phone will often drain very fast or simply die if it’s used for any length of time when it gets that cold. I’ve also had an issue where my phone will get very sluggish and “lag” quite quickly. I’m looking at getting a stand-alone gps unit but only if there’s a benefit in these temps compared to just running gps on the phone.

Not sure, though cold makes all batteries drain fast and some screen types go black.

My fix is keep electronics inside my mid layer. I reference the GPS, but don't keep it out for navigation.

I know people who stick foot warmers on the back of their phone. I have yet to try that.

Sorry, no help in answering your actual question.
